I'm so proud of my daughter
Edited on Sat Sep-11-10 03:23 PM by wcast
I live in rural PA, at the top of the famous "T". Today I was cutting the grass, and my daughter, who is 17, came out to me. She was mad about protesters, out in front of the Post Office in our little town. These protesters were supposed supporters of Lyndon Larouche, but had Impeach Obama signs, and along with a he's nuts sign, complete with the President having a Hitler mustache. I went with her to look, and there they were. Spur of the moment, we stopped at a local store, bought 10 poster boards and two markers, and set out to set up a counter demonstration. It started with my daughter and her friend, and along the way we picked up 7 other people. We got so many positive comments and responses, it got the kids, all about my daughter's age,all worked up. They were excited. We also qualified as news and will be in our local weekly paper.

My sign read,"If you don't like government run health insurance, give back your medicare." The protesters were ticked off to say the least, and two gentlemen came over to talk to me. The one man's rational for him having medicare was it's been around a long time. I asked why I couldn't have government run insurance. He said it would cost too much. When asked how much he paid, he stared to tell me he paid under $100 a month, but then tried to change the subject. I talked with both gentlemen and told them if the were against it, they should be against it all. Long story short, the one actually agreed with me, and then walked away. Now I don't believe we shouldn't have it, I was trying to point out their hypocrisy.

Another man stopped to ask if we believed in God. All of the kids said yes. He started rambling that we should pick people who follow God, and Obama doesn't. I told him that very few politicians of either party truly follow God, and reminded him that Under 6 years of Bush and complete republican control, abortion had not been outlawed, that it was a political whipping post, and that they didn't really care about it. He then said, I'm glad you all love God, and drove away.

The kids all kept track of how many beeps and waves we got, and it was well over 30 in the 2 and 1/2 hours I stayed. Every time it happened, we got glares from across the street. While we got a few negative comments or gestures, it was far outweighed by the positive. If this is how people feel in my rural, Republican leaning area of PA, I believe that if the President and Democrats are bold, they can do well this November. I'm also glad that my daughter cared enough to want to do it.

Edited on Sat Sep-11-10 04:06 PM by AnArmyVeteran
What drives these fanatics, other than hatred and ignorance? I talked with the radical behind his Obama is Hitler poster, but there was no point in trying to speak to him intelligently. He was lost in delusion and hate. I had a plane to catch or I would have stayed all day with a counter protest.

Good for your daughter and the others who stood up to the madness and hate in your hometown! And good for you to raise such a great daughter!!!

16. Last time
idots like those where in front of our post office, I walked past grabbed a obama with a hilter mustache sign, broke it over my knee and kept walking. They tried to call the police, but luckly the guy who called had a warrent out for his arrest and the minute the police showed up he was arrested, it was pretty funny. (btw dont know what he was arrested for, even though im friends with the arresting officer, he wouldnt tell me lol)

36. Definition of dumb criminal
Let's see, think we should call the police because the mean guy broke our sign. But wait, There is a warrant out for my arrest!
That just reeks of stupidity. I'm reminded of the cartoon character who always said, "duh, which way did he go?"

19. Funny part is
They had a bring back the Glass Steagle Act on one sign. Which party got rid of that? I just don't understand their rationale. Thanks for your support. While I believe I'm pretty politically minded, this was my first time doing something like this, and I'm glad it worked out.

Thanks for not letting those nuts getting away with their nutbaggery.

And great discussion on Medicare (am so tired to those that have theirs but don't want anyone else to benefit, as well we all should). AND it's excellent you're getting some press! Especially for teens who can see they DO make a difference. Please let your daughter know about all the pats on the back she and her friends are getting here on DU. Very cool.

45. You have a good daughter. Make sure she votes.
I missed the Federal election in 1972 by weeks. I was not 18 yet.

I cast my first ballot in the Burbank City municipal election of February 1973. I don't remember who I voted for but I realized that local elections were as important as the "big" ones. Plus my mom was counting the votes and she would be disappointed that such a loud mouth like me would not have voted. :hi: Mom

It gets to be a habit and, with me, I really care about my local county and state representative elections. I have a good to "professional" relationship with them all. I like that word "professional" so impersonal yet ... knowledgeable.

Get her to vote when she is able. She will be thrilled.

I'm glad the kids were upset and the parent showed them how to deal with it - with action. I don't care if you don't like President Obama - we still have to get out the vote to prevent a right wing take over, this time with more nuts than a PayDay candy bar.

You say that politicans aren't really following god b/c they couldn't outlaw abortion and that you don't beleive we should have it) govt run health-care) but just wanted a good debate.

This makes me think you are trying to get us to cheer for you while slipping in a conservative agenda. I don't agree with any of your stances except that ones u raise hypothetically I and consider myself a liberal.
