Man enraged over how wife cooked his eggs shot five people dead with shotgun before killing himself

Relative: Spat began Ky. rampage that killed 6

JACKSON, Ky. – A gunman enraged over how his wife cooked his eggs in rural eastern Kentucky shot five people dead with a shotgun before killing himself, a relative of two of the victims said.

Trooper Jody Sims of the Kentucky State Police said 47-year-old Stanley Neace killed five people in two mobile homes around 11:30 Saturday morning, then went to his home and turned the gun on himself.

Sims said that when state police arrived about an hour after the gunfire began, they heard a single gunshot and found Neace's body on the porch of his home in the mobile home park outside Jackson in Breathitt County. The county is home to about 16,000 people in the rugged eastern part of the state.

Sherri Anne Robinson, a relative of two of the victims, said witnesses to the shootings told her that Neace became enraged when his wife did not cook his breakfast to his liking...

I have a friend who lives not too far from there. Quite a bit of meth and crack in the region. I wouldn't have expected it in the midst of the peaceful rural countryside, but it's there.

Yea, I saw that. I wonder if the area has faced budget cuts
which leads to reducing the sheriff and police workforce?

There are consequences to these cuts all of the states are considering.

78. If they live out in an area like my sis in Oklahoma
Calling 911 means waiting for someone from the area sheriff dept to get out of bed, get dressed, find their way to your house.
She lives outside "city limits" so the "city police dept" does nothing. And really, she can get to the city limit within minutes in her car, but since her house is outside those limits, they would be screwed if they ever needed law enforcement at their house for a life threatening situation.

Edited on Sat Sep-11-10 07:15 PM by divideandconquer
It's great terrorism, perfect disaster crapitalism. Create a problem by making sure the worst people are armed as heavily as possible, so everyone else has be armed, guarded or voting for a police state.

I bet a lot of women will be paying much more attention to how they cook the eggs for their gunner husbands. Wonder how Kleck and Lott/Rosh measure that as gun use?

I mean, what really does it take to be evicted from a trailer park? Not to perpetuate the trailer park stereotype, but it had to have esclated quite high for an eviction to be done.

53. Media coverage has changed..
People don't remember the days that something didn't happen. All crimes seem cumulative. Additional problems with recall like 'telescoping' (when we think something happened more recently than it actually did) make one feel like there are more crimes than an objective analysis shows.

2008 had less crime than 2007, which had less crime than 2006.. (Overall lower since the early 90's). The FBI will publish the 2009 numbers at the end of this month or the first of the next. The preliminary report showed another drop in the first half of 2009.

Do you think this headline would've gotten hits (ie, advertising revenue) if it said "man in the process of eviction kills family, and three neighbors"? Likewise, if the egg story (only related by one witness in the article) wasn't even reported, would DU really be frowning on this guy or would everyone be feeling sorry for him because he was getting evicted*?

*ignoring the usual gun debates.

Robinson said that when his wife fled to a neighbor's trailer, Neace followed and shot his wife, his stepdaughter and three witnesses. Robinson says he allowed a young girl to flee to a neighbor's home.

"He just got mad at his wife for not making his breakfast right and he shot her," said Robinson, who answered at a phone listing for Neace. "She tried to run to tell my family and he shot them too because they found out about it."

32. Here's an interesting book...
http://www.amazon.com/Going-Postal-Rebellion-Workplaces-Columbine/dp/1932360824/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1284254611&sr=8-4
An eye-opening look at the phenomenon of school and workplace shootings in America, Going Postal explores the rage-murder phenomenon that has plagued — and baffled — America for the last three decades, and offers some provocative answers to the oft-asked question, "Why?" By juxtaposing the historical place of rage in America with the social climate that has existed since the 1980s — when Reaganomics began to widen the gap between executive and average-worker earnings — the author crafts a convincing argument that these schoolyard and office massacres can be seen as modern-day slave rebellions. He presents many fascinating and unexpected cases in detail. Like slave rebellions, these massacres are doomed, gory, sometimes even inadvertently comic, and grossly misunderstood. Taking up where Bowling for Columbine left off, this book seeks to set these murders in their proper context and thereby reveal their meaning.

In this guy's case I'm reluctant to lay the entire blame on "the system" much as I hate it. While no doubt he got more than his fair share of bad breaks in his life, the real pity is that "the system" didn't have him locked up a long time ago. In all probability, he spent about half his life being warehoused instead of rehabilitated.

1. He could still be in jail on previous charges.

67. What dk really means:
"Without such easy access to their rights, this likely wouldn't have happened."

At least have the guts to say it.

70. If you believe that the 2nd amendment protects a fundamental freedom
then you need to accept incidents like this as the cost of that freedom.

If you accept the first amendment as a protection of freedom of speech, then if the speech involves burning religions texts, you support that freedom

If other rights protect those accused of a crime, you accept that sometimes the guilty will get away free.

74. What if he hadn't owned a gun, but had used a gun under the terms of an End User License Agreement?
If he violated a term of the EULA, then the owner could have repossessed the gun. Of course, EULAs are usually used for dangerous things such as software, but they could be used for safe things such as guns.

51. AP update now says 'eviction over his hostile temper':

JACKSON, Ky. – A man facing eviction over his hostile temper became enraged by how his wife cooked his eggs and killed her, his stepdaughter and three neighbors with a shotgun before shooting himself on Saturday....

Landlord Ray Rastegar said Neace received monthly disability checks from the Social Security Administration, though he didn't know what his disability was. Rastegar said he had begun the process of evicting Nease, who had lived in the trailer park for about seven years, because he had become increasingly hostile toward neighbors in recent months. "He was unpredictable," Rastergar said. "Little things would set him off."

Neighbor Steve Smith saw the rampage from the window of his mobile home. When he walked outside, Smith said Neace took a shot at him but missed. "He chased his wife around that Jeep shooting at her," Smith said, pointing to a shotup SUV parked outside his mobile home. "I heard her screaming and running."

Smith said Neace ended up mumbling to himself on the porch of his trailer, pointed the shotgun at his head and pulled the trigger. "I have to admit, a little grin came across my face when I saw his brains go flying," Smith said. "He's been trouble ever since he's been here. He's always been trouble."

That gave me a little grin, too. Shame he didn't do this before taking the lives of 5 other people.

63. Gave you a little grin too, did it?
I submit that the picture above may apply to more than the neighbor who made the statement.

65. The guys wife was being shot at, running for her life.
If you couldn't understand the relief that guy had and appreciate why he might "grin" because someone unquestionably evil killed themselves, then it's clear to me that you have interpersonal issues that this thread may not be appropriate for.

68. What -- nobody's mentioned Rand Paul yet?
http://voices.washingtonpost.com/thefix/senate/rand-pauls-drugs-problem.html

August 25, 2010

Kentucky Senate nominee Rand Paul (R) has run into problems in recent days over comments regarding drug use in the Bluegrass State, an issue that Democrats are using to cast the GOP candidate as out-of-touch.

Methamphetamine, marijuana and prescription drug abuse have become an epidemic in rural parts of the state -- particularly in eastern Kentucky. A recent poll showed 60 percent of the eastern 5th congressional district rated drugs as the biggest non-economic issue in their area, and the number was around 25 percent in other rural areas.

So when Paul appeared to dismiss drug abuse in eastern Kentucky as "not a pressing issue," heads turned -- and Republican strategists grimaced.
