Reuters reports three Koran abuse incidents
Reuters appears to be one of the few major media outlets reporting that Korans were burned today.

(Reuters) - The United States marked the anniversary of the September 11 attacks on Saturday with commemorative ceremonies and although a pastor had canceled plans for a high-profile protest burning of the Koran, the Muslim holy book was abused in at least three separate incidents.

Hundreds of people in favor and against the building of an Islamic cultural center and mosque near the site of the toppled World Trade Center gathered in New York -- hours after ceremonies in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania to mark the attacks nine years ago that killed nearly 3,000 people. The protests were peaceful.

But there were at least two incidents of abuse of the Koran in Lower Manhattan. Separately, two evangelical preachers not affiliated with any mainstream church burned two copies of the Koran in Tennessee.

Contrary to what a lot of DUers seem to think, U.S media is NOT hyping this story. U.S media are, in fact, declining to report in any detail on the events that took place today. The two park 51 demonstrations today have to have been the most under-exposed demos in recent history.

Despite this, the story will continue to be reported more extensively in Muslim media outlets. The ironic result of the U.S media's self-censorship on this is that the only people not getting the whole story are Americans depending on American media.

We wait to see the reaction of the Muslim world when it wakes up tomorrow. Will the official U.S media story -- that Jones backed down and didn't burn a Koran -- hold, or will the actual instances of 9/11 Koran burnings be the focus of attention?

1. US Media is not hyping the story NOW.... a wee bit late, however

Umm after an entire week of hyping this entire situation, I am glad to see some restraint NOW. However, it is sorely disingenuous to suggest the MSM has been responsible in its reporting, even if they've gotten some common sense pounded into them NOW. They've done one hell of a lot of damage to this point with their irresponsible hyping.

3. It hasn't been the US media that's been hyping the story at all
Up until Petraeus spoke earlier this past week, the Koran burning story has been getting much more coverage from media in the major Muslin countries than from U.S media.

Here's an article from yesterday on coverage in the Muslim world:

How (and why) the media made Terry Jones a star
Gen. Petraeus' comments sparked a frenzy in the U.S. But the story had been going strong in Muslim media for weeks

5. "Muslin" countries? Really?

(hopefully that was a typo for you)

Ridiculous to suggest, though, that the US media has not been hyping this story up to now.

8. No typo

The story has been hyped far more for the past several weeks in Islamic states with large Muslim populations.

And it isn't ridiculous at to suggest the US media has been pulling back. That's what the Salon article I cited shows. US media have treated the story quite delicately from the outset, and coverage only went stratospheric this past week after Petraeus made his statement earlier about Jones allegedly putting the troops at risk.

People claiming the U.S media are hyping this story are simply wrong. I would argue that they are being far to circumspect in their reporting, to the point that Americans are not getting the full story.

10. You refer to Muslims as Muslin and expect to be taken seriously?
The hyping of the story came before today.

2. "We want to show that Islam is not a religion of peace,"

The leader of a controversial Amarillo faith group plans to burn copies of the Quran today at Sam Houston Park.

David Grisham, director of Repent Amarillo, said he wants to show support for the Rev. Terry Jones, pastor of a tiny church in Gainesville, Fla.

Jones' plans to burn 200 copies of the Muslim holy book on the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks sparked a media firestorm and outrage around the world.

"We want to show that Islam is not a religion of peace," Grisham said

4. And there's Springfield Bob
http://www.wsmv.com/news/24939389/detail.html

What I can't figure is whether Terry Jones backing off kills the story and stops the threatened violence, or does the fact that some Korans were in fact burned and abused by people other than Terry, is that just as bad as if Terry had done it, and the threatened violence will happen anyway?

And if this is going to blow, will it happen fast, or will there be a slow build, as with the violence against Danes after the Mohhamed cartoons were published a few years back?

6. I'm kind of glad they did it.
I really don't want my freedoms to be subject to anyone's taking offense. I'm not happy anyone felt the need to burn any book. I'm not happy people burn American flags. I'm not happy when billboards go up calling homosexuality evil. But I'll be damned if any of those actions should be restricted because someone is offended. There's a much bigger picture here than most are wanting to admit.

12. You and I were watching a different media then
By the way, while this story was all ears... and all speed ahead... we had a small gas explosion in a non important area of the country that took the MSM five hours to half ass cover.

Yep, different media we watched.

As to foreign media... you are shocked? Usually if I want to find out what is going on in the US that is of any importance, like oh primaries in 2004... read the Guardian... not any US outlet.

I thought the usual term for such a thing would be desecration.
