Martin Sheen and his son Emilio Estevez join picket lines in Toronto.
Good for them.

Hyatt Regency hotel employees have staged another walkout as Toronto continues to host its annual international film festival.

Unionized workers, represented by UNITE HERE Local 75, raised the picket line at 11 a.m. Sunday after a series of unsuccessful bargaining attempts.

1. Solidarity...

K&R not always big on celebrity actions, often hype, but union workers, even actors, gotta be in solidarity with all workers...

4. Yep
I agree about the celeb stuff in general but I gotta give them props for knowing about this and joining the strike because it's clearly not just some charity-du-jour vanity crap.

Power to the people.

6. Martin Sheen's been arrested on a picket line...
...or such, usually on anti-war protests, more times than I've had hot meals this month.

21. He played the part of Mitch Snyder in the movie about him, and did some actions
concerning homelessness.

I have a lot of respect for Martin Sheen.

7. I went to look up the surname dissonance. Martin Sheen's real name is Ramón Estevez.
I didn't know that. How bigoted must people be that an actor can't get a job if he has a Spanish name? Wow.

8. He has stated in interviews that he wishes he hadn't
changed his name. His father was from Spain, his mother from Ireland.

9. He's part Irish and I believe should be able to
also use that part of his heritage as his identity if it's helpful to him. Rita Hayworth was originally Margarita Cansino, a flamenco dancer, and was also part Irish, so she capitalized on that half of her heritage. Let's face it, back then it was hard to get an acting job except as a stereotype if you had ethnic baggage.

13. He used to live down the street from my mom...
in Staten Island. Of course, my grandma says he's not American because he didn't support the war in Iraq. I had a meltdown in the car about 2 seconds after that comment.

Good for the sane part of the Sheen/Estevez clan.

16. Martin Sheen said
in a TV interview a few (or more) years ago that he was one arrest away from serving hard time for protesting. But he added that nothing was going to discourage him from doing what he felt he must do.

OT, but in the same interview, he said he was pretty much an atheist - except that as a former Catholic, he had a special, lifelong love for the Virgin Mary. "Take away my faith," he said (in effect), "but don't take away my Virgin Mary." :-)

18. They're in Toronto to promote their new film "The Way,"
about the Camino de Santiago in Spain. They filmed it on location last year. Those who have seen it have given it good reviews so far.
