Laying Out The Case

by digby

In case you were wondering what kind of fever dreams the wingnuts were planning to bring to life if they gain a majority, here's what one of my emailers sent today. I think you can see where Sharron Angle and thsoe people at the tea party rallies are getting their kookier ideas:

"The Case for Impeachment: Why Barack Hussein Obama Should be Impeached to Save America" by Steven Baldwin covers all of these issues and more in making its arguments.

"This is the beginning of the end for the United States unless the people exercise their precious remaining liberties and stand and demand that their elected representatives impeach this president before further mortal damage is inflicted upon America," the report concludes.

The author explains that the Founding Fathers enshrined the impeachment clause into the United States Constitution because they feared that a president intent on subverting the very principles upon which the American experiment was built would someday rise to power.

"Despite all the checks and balances and obstacles they put in place, the Founders knew a determined cabal could still gain control of all three branches of government and wield this consolidation of power to dismantle our cherished constitutional principles, and eradicate the freedoms that generations of Americans sacrificed their lives to preserve," he writes.

"Make no mistake: That day is now upon us."

In "The Case for Impeachment," Baldwin, a senior research fellow at the Western Journalism Center, says the issue of impeachment "is no longer a laughing matter."

(snip)

It seems thin to me, but once you've impeached a president over a blowjob, I think the threshold is probably pretty low.

1. On the other hand...
... once you've failed to impeach a president over lying to Congress repeatedly, I'd say the threshold is pretty high.

29. I was talking about Dubya.
If Congress failed to impeach that bastard even after all he did, then Obama ought to have nothing to worry about.

14. High (non-existent?) threshold for Republicans
Edited on Sun Sep-12-10 03:50 PM by Proud Liberal Dem
LOW threshold for Democrats.

Lying about a CONSENSUAL affair between ADULTS is "high crimes and misdemeanors" according to Republicans.

Lying about the need to invade a sovereign country, actually invading a country over false and/or misleading pretenses, sanctioning (if not promoting) torture, indefinite detention, warrantless wiretapping, and other things over an eight year period of time too numerous to mention apparently does not meet the "high crimes and misdemeanors" threshold set by our constitution.

There's nothing in the above screed that can even remotely warrant impeachment of President Obama. WTF are they smoking?

:banghead:

16. Let them try it. The voters will punish them for wasting
our time and money on a racist witch hunt.

17. I'm not worried about them actually finding an "impeachable" offense
in regards to President Obama and I do think that they will pay dearly for it if they decide to try it. My only concern is the time and money that will be unnecessarily wasted before people decide to get mad at them. Even though President Clinton won re-election in 1996 he was still stuck with a Republican Congress for the remainder of term and then they ran Congress for an additional SIX years (for a grand total of 12 YEARS) before the Democrats regained the majority. Hopefully, IF they get the majority in Congress, they'll overreach so badly that we'll easily win back control in 2012. It's just a shame that the next two years would be wasted with the do-nothing, no-ideas, no brains Republicans in charge of Congress. They won't be able to get much accomplished either but we won't make any progress on anything with them in charge and they can still do a lot of damage.

:shudder:

27. They probably won't, but the back benchers will make real
noise about it, and that will help us.

If they tie the government up with one investigation after another, that could help us politically. Won't help the economy.

34. Nah
I think I'll pass. Boehner has the charisma and intellect of a wet sponge (no offense to sponges intended). With Republicans Boehner, Cantor, McConnell, Steele, it's sometimes hard to worry too much about the fall elections but for the so-called "enthusiasm gap" and the teabaggers.

...and many here, would gladly impeach Obama themselves -- for his failure to faithfully execute the laws, to wit the Constitution, re habeas corpus, detention w/o trial, wiretapping, etc.

So don't go pointing fingers.

This, friends, is why it was the gravest of tactical

all of their criminal deeds. It only emboldened the
idiots.

7. What gets me the banter around the phrase curtailed and
taken away our liberties. But not one can sit down and put on paper or say what liberties have been taken away from them during Obamas partial term.

Bush and his bunch of dictatorial cronies took away more of our liberties than have been taken away by all the other presidents combined. And the phrase usurped the presidency. President Obama won the first legal election in the last three elections. Sorrowfully the one in 2000 was an appointment by the supreme court and the one in 2004 was manufacturing and programming electronic voting machine totals in Ohio. So who in the hell usurped elections...BUSH BUSH BUSH BUSH.

There is absolutely no truth to anything this Baldwin has written. I think we should start to send letters to what is left of the newspapers in this country and we should lay out all the ways the corporations and organizations like the tea bags are trying to overthrow our government. They wouldn't publish it, but maybe we should get back to how Bush's old granddaddy tried to over throw the government of FDR. I know they showed the video once on the History Channel and now won't even offer it for people to buy.

11. As Jon Stewart said, he's the poor man's Jimmy Baldwin
And the homeless man's Alec Baldwin.

He was good in "Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man", though. Everytime he appears on screen we used to shout "Lesser Baldwin!" and drink a shot.
