And I know quite a few DUers who will be happy to read his blog. For those who don't know him, this is a brilliant and important voice. I'm thrilled to share his blog here.

War Veteran Tomas Young Talks Politics

I was watching a documentary called “PoliWood” about celebrities and Democratic and Republican 2008 National Conventions. I shed a few tears as I watched Barack Obama give his big speech accepting the party’s nomination for President. I got a little misty because I remember all the hope that I and many people had that somehow things were going to profoundly change in America.

Then a strange thing happened, the Republicans, for some reason, decided to play like the kid with the ball who wanted no one else to play with it. We had a President with lofty goals, he wanted to make health care available to everyone, regulate Wall Street so the less fortunate could benefit, and he wanted to bring about peaceful resolutions to our conflicts in the Middle East. Yet, while we all had hope for a brighter future, the Republicans colluded to shoot down every bill that the President tried to bring forth down with a indignant NO and preyed on a people’s innate fear of change, casting doubts about Obama’s ethnicity and his citizenship status, all to help regain some political clout.

I also heard a great argument for the end of C-SPAN. Ever since its inception, it has allowed our congress people sit in their offices doing nothing while an aide gets paid to watch TV and report back what was said…

As much as I despise the Republicans and believe that what they plan to do to the country I fought and bled for is horribly beyond reproach, I have to give them credit, they know how to get things done – with total disregard for bipartisanship and, in many cases the majority of America.

If they – and I mean they, we have to take an us vs. them mentality – take over, we will see massive deregulation of the energy industries, which will lead to more coal mine explosions and oil spills. They will cut funding for, or completely shut down, the Department of Education, Social Security and Medicare. But fear not, I believe if we, honest, free-thinking people who look at their country and think what is happening here, can just bide our time, the Republican brand will be so ruined, people will be thirsting for a positive change.
