I am at Whole Foods Market right now! (part 2)
Now that the health caer bill has been passed (special thanks to Dennis Kucinich, a pretty cool guy who doesn't afraid of anything) I think it's about time to set aside the Whole Foods boycott, even for those people who disagreed with me a few months ago and continued to boycott before heath care was passed. The CEO may be a libertarian, but many of the vendors that they purchase from aid the progressive cause and contribute to a sustainable and healthy food industry. I don't think that you'll find this at the conventional food markets, and I'm not sure that the CEOs of those other ones would necessarily support Obama's health care bill anyway.

I realize that some people might feel that it's being a fake progressive to not boycott Whole Foods, but what would be my sinister and/or selfish motive to shop here? It's not cheaper to shop here, and it's not even the closest supermarket to my house!

I once happened to see a company inspector (not the Health Dept.) examine a Wegmans bakery. This guy had a video camera with a fiberoptic lens. He looked under, on top of, thru, behind, inside everything. Amazing.

Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. is a family-owned U.S. regional supermarket chain with more than 75 stores<4> spread across the mid-Atlantic region, including New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, and Maryland. Wegman's doesn't exist because I've never seen one.

133. I know everyone says Whole Foods stores are expensive
and while they are on many things, I've found some brands I like (like Tofurky, Quorn, Turtle Mountain and Yogi Tea) are actually cheaper (and fresher) than at my local Kroger's. HEB is no longer "local" so I don't shop there as much. Their version of Whole Foods, i.e., Central Market, is about twice as far away as the nearest Whole Foods, but it's good to go there for bulk items. Both stores have far more variety of the kind of quality I like than Kroger, HEB, or Randall's :D

All of them are very clean stores. Foodarama and Food City on the other hand...

so I don't buy meat there...just some staples...that aren't from China. GINGER ALE...some FLOUR, Organic Onions...and Barbecue Sauce without High Fructose Corn Syrup.

Baked goods are GREAT...and their "Carolina Tail Gate Party" dinners (prepared) have been pretty cool.

And the second closest. What a bougie shitbox that city is!

At any rate, yeah. Boycotts (like everything else, really), get tricky in application, because you have to balance out putting pressure on X, who you don't like, versus harming Y down the chain, who you do like.

13. I figured that the CEO (I wanna say his name is John Mackey but I'm not sure)
Edited on Sun Sep-12-10 09:01 PM by LoZoccolo
didn't really say anything that wasn't said by anyone else so it was like pissing in an ocean of piss anyways. And I didn't even disagree completely with it because his message was that you have to actively participate in your health by yourself. As is usual with libertarianism, it was overly-simplistic and dismissive, but I understood his view to be part of a larger philosophy (and one that he does take a lot of responsibility for - Whole Foods is relatively pretty good to it's employees from what I can tell). So punishing the suppliers to gain not much of a benefit in punishing the CEO didn't seem worth it.

141.  no he didn't say anything that hasn't been said by any other Repug.

These are real gems.
• Repeal all state laws which prevent insurance companies from competing across state lines. We should all have the legal right to purchase health insurance from any insurance company in any state and we should be able use that insurance wherever we live. Health insurance should be portable.

• Repeal government mandates regarding what insurance companies must cover. These mandates have increased the cost of health insurance by billions of dollars. What is insured and what is not insured should be determined by individual customer preferences and not through special-interest lobbying.

• Enact tort reform to end the ruinous lawsuits that force doctors to pay insurance costs of hundreds of thousands of dollars per year. These costs are passed back to us through much higher prices for health care.
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970204251404574342170072865070.html

The first one enables insurance companies to set up shop in states that have laws to benefit them and offer no protection the the insured.
The second, now that is what you call a real death panel.
Tort reform to big business means one thing and one thing only, no re-dress for the working class.

I don't support repug policies or businesses, but that is my choice and what you do is yours.

14. I go to Whole Foods for one item I can't get elsewhere
Interesting little story, they had advertised a program where they give a percentage of profits from a particular day to a local organization.

I calculated from the amount and percentage listed that this one Whole Foods makes $75,000 in profits... per day. That's profits, meaning AFTER they pay all their costs including labor. One store.

Only way that happens is if they're overcharging their customers left and right and up the middle.

And that is why there are so many deletes in your threads..you can't seem to tolerate anyone telling the truth, or real debate, so any thread you start is almost impossible to read, as the deletes are so frequent , no one can make heads or tales of what is being said in any thread you start or participate in!

I think it only shows how strongly you are in a minority and that the insecurity of allowing anyone else's opinions to be seen is prevalent where you post!

You post in my threads a lot, and much of the time you provide witty retorts, but every now and then you get very angry and, in this case, self-destructive. In fact, the OP isn't even divisive. Basically every sentence of your post is false, whereas the OP makes very good points.

"The Admins said they wanted change months ago"

They did. Perhaps their vision of change is removing posts like yours, rather than removing posts like the OPs. Just food for thought.

perhaps if these alleged "good posters" had made better effort to stay within the rules, they'd still be posting.

33. I post some threads which encourage people to get involved in real-life activism for Democrats.
I don't think that that should be considered divisive here.

I am not really a person who watches the headlines in this fast-paced news cycle so I don't post a whole lot of news stories (which I think is one of the really good things about DU, calling attention to news stories that might get neglected by, say, cable news).

I don't think I'd post many things that are similar to what other people say because they've already said them. I like to post novel things, some of which go against the majority here, but which I still think is progressive. I've given progressive reasons for my position in this thread.

If I recall correctly, you are a punk rocker, right? I am the Dick Clark of DU, but there's no reason for you to be the G.G. Allin and threaten to extinguish yourself from DU in front of all these people. About nine months or so ago you invited the moderators to ban you, but since then you have enjoyed nine more months of DU. Think of what would have happened if you had been banned at your request then, and realize that you might not want it to happen now.

Also, I have not posted as many threads which have been locked since the new rules were put into effect.

Last time I posted links to all your locks over a SINGLE month you blamed the mods for locking them instead of taking responsibility for your own words. If you want I can post them again?

Think of what would have happened if you had been banned at your request then, and realize that you might not want it to happen now.

Your concern touches me. If I'm going to be G.G. Allin perhaps you could try your hand at a Kurt Cobain?

39. I consider the announcement of the new rules to be the beginning of the new rules era.
If you are going to post them again, I would prefer that you post a link to the conversation you are talking about rather than giving your interpretation of how I reacted. But I would prefer you do neither because that would be breaking the rules.

Speaking of the rules, can you see that while you and my other detractors are accusing me of breaking the rules, that you are doing things like calling me a "douche" and telling me to kill myself?

Edited on Mon Sep-13-10 10:15 AM by flyarm
wow if I knew activism was so damn easy I could have saved myself years and years of walking streets and answering phones, and reading computer sheets by the thousands and making calls for GOTV..and I could have sat in whole foods instead of walking in snow up to my ass knocking on doors in the dead of winter in Iowa..and NH..and trying to protect people's votes in my state of Fla..by being a poll watcher at large..and facing off with Bubba to walk people into vote..and getting pushed and shoved ..and going to SC for gotv and having pit bulls sniffing my crotch and guys coming to the door with a half towel on..or running a huge Democratic field office..for 4 counties in my state..and running rallies, and sitting in cars all night, night after night, watching the voting machine warehouses to make sure no one illegally entered the warehouse..or sat in court houses trying to protect people's votes! And housed Field reps sent to my area by the National Dem party , or wrote articles for local newspapers with the democratic prospective...or did rapid research and communication for the National DNC.for years on end ..and giving fund raisers and going to fund raisers..and running meet ups..

all besides the charity work I do..

who'd a known..I could have just sat in a grocery store and taken my lap top and been a activist!

silly fucking me!

and keeping their homes! Most of those folks can't afford Whole Foods!..they just want any food they can get to feed their families..

Something more heldpful would be if LOCO wrote from a food warehouse supplying food to those folks in dire need for food! Or working to find jobs for those in need! And I don't mean jobs at McD's..I mean real jobs that can sustain a family!

While this guy is telling us he can go to Whole Foods to shop, and typing to us that's he's there...typing, I have to go to Aldi's (a really, really cheap grocery store) just so I can afford to buy supper for tomorrow night.

I'm even buying tomatoes there now instead of Trader Joes, after the recent scandal they've had with harvesting tomatoes...

http://talkingunion.wordpress.com/2010/08/27/traderjoe/

I still buy some other stuff at Trader Joes, but I've told them that I think they need to get management to deal with this mess soon. At least they aren't as nakedly and consciously engaged in bad labor practices as WF CEO was with his health care comments, which I'll never forgive him for!

If my life became that pathetic, I would have to re-think my life!

Like perhaps donating my time to a worthy cause? Especially since charities are going through some of their roughest times right now? When the charity is needed the most by so many?? Ya think???????

How pathetic to sit in a Gorcery store and be on ones computer!!

113. Aside from advocating deregulation of insurers, cutting Medicare and busting unions
Whole Foods squeezes its suppliers and vendors through its purchasing and payment polices, while pocketing exorbitant mark-ups.

Not my choice of where to do business when I'm in the states to be sure.

Edited on Mon Sep-13-10 12:49 PM by flyarm
I thought when I read in this subject line.. to quote you.."Do you think I would be helping people more by buying"

I thought you might continue by saying ..Buying food for the needy.........or a food bank or something kind like that..

but You proved me wrong .....:nuke: :nuke: :nuke:

silly me...keep typing at Whole Foods..I just hope when you leave you don't run into a mom in the parking lot begging for food for her hungry children!!

ahhh but Whole Foods runs off those kinds of moms from their parking lots!! so whewww..you are safe!!

Edited on Mon Sep-13-10 11:46 AM by flyarm
ahhhh but you weren't around DU when we posted all about that though were you???????

I wouldn't spit at Walmart let alone walk into one! Sam Walton was the most evil against Unions and Labor!!

But then again..you will probably tell us all how you are working hard to get "other dems to be more activist
for the dems " right?? Sounds about right to me!!

Gee have fun at Walmart with all the repukes you will rub elbows with!!

I swore off Walmart many many years ago..when it was exposed how anti-labor they are!
And how anti-emocratic party they are...

I guess you didn't get the memo did you?????????

wasn't in the repuke talking points ..in the way back machine..it was only discussed by DEMOCRATS!!

125. Though I agree with you that Walmart is evil...
the claim that they hire illegals is wrong. At least the store I work at, you have to show two forms of ID before you even work there, and they run a background check.

They are definitely anti-union. The first day on the job they showed the new hires an anti-union video. As much as it pissed me off (with the misinformation in the video), I needed the job and shut up about it. That's how desperate for work I was. :(

how they locked them in the stroes at night to clean..they locked them in so no one would know they hired illegals to do the cleaning!

maybe you can find it in DU's archives!

But, I don't think they have Wi-Fi, so I'll leave my computer at home.

Then tomorrow, after I go kayaking, I'll start putting in my winter veggies. Broccoli, lettuce, cabbage, tomatoes, etc. It beats the fuck out of going to the grocery store in December and January.

148. Personally, I buy as much as possible from the food co-op down the street
They are about to move into a newer, larger building, thanks to raising the money from their members.

I used to buy other stuff at Target, but not since they contributed to the campaign of the knuckle-dragging Republicanite candidate for MN governor. Now I get other stuff at Lund's, which is at least locally owned.

and practices regarding their employees. Otherwise, we have 2 locally owned and operated grocers whose employees are unionized and who provide decent wages and benefits. We also make use of the local farmers' markets in the summer.

Macky is an a**ho$@. Who will do anything to make a buck

DALLAS — The chief executive of Whole Foods Market Inc. wrote anonymous online attacks against a smaller rival and questioned why anyone would buy its stock, before Whole Foods announced an offer to buy the other company this year.
The postings on Internet financial forums, made under the name “rahodeb,” said Wild Oats Markets Inc. stock was overpriced. The statements predicted the company would fall into bankruptcy and then be sold after its stock fell below $5 per share.
