Iowa leaves impression on German students
I have to agree with the girls about corndogs..

http://www.siouxcityjournal.com/news/local/6fbef1a3-065d-52b2-8eae-26312d8f2629.html

After more than a week of mostly fast food in the Hawkeye State, Müller and Christina Haas agree their first corn dog at the Clay County Fair will probably be their last. “’Too much fat,” Schwab explained. “Since we have been in America we have eaten fast foot and fat food. That’s enough.”

1. Not to be snarky - I hate corndogs
and I know Americans eat way too much fast food... but I know from experience that German food is some of the ickiest in the world. Both here and there you can find an excellent meal, but IMHO, more often here than there. ;)

3. Funny- I recall reading that WWII German prisoners of war often complained about
the food they were fed by US captors. They were apalled to find they had been eating the same rations US soldiers ate every day.

Seems like not much has changed since.

4. A fair isn't really the best way to judge American food, nor are
fast food places. There are plenty of restaurants in Iowa that offer German specialty menus. My favorite of all time is the Ronneberg, in the Amana Colonies. http://www.ronneburgrestaurant.com/

Absolutely fantastic.

8. I suspect that most young Germans don't eat a whole lot of traditional German food.....
...... just as no Britons under 40 who I know eat Bangers & Mash or beef pies.

make pancake batter. dip a piece of white bread in it and and fry on griddle. shake cinnamon and sugar on them (maybe some butter). yum, yum.

17. My mom used to call those "Arme Ritter" (poor knights)
They would generally be a side dish with vegetable soup - a Saturday food :)
