Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Elena Kagan at the Opera Ball (Russell Hirshon for the Washington National Opera)
Saturday's opening of the Washington National Opera's "Un Ballo in Maschera" was a debut of another sort: a first glimpse of newly minted Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan. Kagan was the guest of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg (making her first public appearance since husband Martin passed away in June) and gala patron Adrienne Arsht. Kagan (big smile, short black dress, younger-looking in person) got the VIP treatment: A longtime opera subscriber, she was upgraded for the night to center orchestra seats next to Ginsburg, and guests at the post-show dinner at the Italian Embassy fussed over her as much as general director Plácido Domingo.
