BLUEDOG TRAITORS! Democrats urge Pelosi to extend Bush tax cuts temporarily
Edited on Mon Sep-13-10 01:04 PM by Joanne98
A group of moderate and conservative House Democrats is urging Speaker Nancy Pelosi to temporarily extend all the Bush era tax cuts.

Washington (CNN) - A group of moderate and conservative House Democrats is urging Speaker Nancy Pelosi to temporarily extend all the Bush era tax cuts that are due to expire at the end of this year.

In a draft letter to Pelosi and House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, these Democrats write, "We believe in times of economic recovery it makes good sense to maintain things as they are in the short term, to provide families and businesses the certainty required to plan and make sound budget decisions. Providing this certainty will give small businesses, the backbone of our economic recovery, confidence and stability."

The Democrats' letter is not finalized yet, but is being circulated by Rep. Jim Matheson, Utah, a leading Blue Dog, New Democratic Coalition leader Rep. Melissa Bean, Illinois, Rep. Glenn Nye, Virginia, and Rep. Gary Peters, Michigan, according to two Democratic aides familiar with the latest version.

10. hmm
Many will be out of a job in November, one way or another. The Democrats that have failed to excite the base will be the object lesson to many, unless the DLC manages the story.

16. I've learned so much since I joined DU. I used to think a democrat was a
democrat and all had similar values. That was really naive of me. I did not understand about bluedogs, the DLC and all until some members of DU explained it to me. Now I've passed that information onto other democrats that had thought similar to me. Now a lot of what happens makes sense to me as it does to them. Now it appears more and more I'm branded some type of LW democrat which is interesting for someone who has always been simply wanting fairness and equality for all.

18. Someone who is a pragmatist and whose voting record shows a tendency to
vote on issues independent of party or campaign contributions. Now, do any of the bush policies (which many of these Blue Sheep supported) seem like they are anywhere near the center to you?

Same thing goes for health care. The public option was the centrist position between doing nothing and single payer. Same thing could also be said about military spending. There is a middle ground between giving the military (and their contractors) everything they want and cutting the pentagon budget by at least 30% (which is what I want).

There is nothing centrist about voting for the economic interests of the top 1% the majority of the time. Which is what many of these people do.

28. Let's face it: They ARE Democrats.
Not good ones.

Not the ones we need.

But the party is full of people like them.

Let's not confuse what a Democrat should be with what they really are.

6. This is utter horseshit!
We believe in times of economic recovery it makes good sense to maintain things as they are in the short term, to provide families and businesses the certainty required to plan and make sound budget decisions. How? How does giving the wealthiest 2% more money provide "certainty" for small businesses?

These folks are complete asses and not of the Democratic-mascot variety...

19. The nation was captivated and a wonderful opportunity was
squandered. These people are not IMO coming out of the woodwork to vote again. A golden opportunity was lost and IMO RW radio/tv, teabaggers and the like have taken over the void and that is a disaster for the democrats. I often shake my head and wonder WTF. If the tax breaks are extended, even temporarily, it will just confirm my feelings and many democrats I know that it is basically the same old sh**.

Hey bluedogs, maybe we should maintain things as they are in the short term, eh old chaps? No! Emergency! Cut SS Now! Oh dear God, it's insolvent, I swear it's insolvent!

Certainty for making sound budget decisions, indeed. Start clipping coupons for cat food.

he was open to doing this at a fundraiser I recently attended! :banghead:

If he goes through with this and votes to extend all cuts, he can forget about me making one phone call or knocking on one door this fall in the get out the vote effort.

25. The 'Dogs are the first ones out of the gate...
Anytime there is a controversial issue, before the Republicans can even respond, they rush to disagree with the Democratic strategy. They do it everytime. Just so the Repubs will know they have an ally before the debate is even started. They are a sight to see!

A way to take the focus off of the "Party of No" and put it on the Democratic leadership in Congress. He knows the Blue Dogs better than we do.

35. This "traitor" word when someone expresses their personal political opinions is disturbing.
Right or wrong, no one is a "traitor" when they act on their personal beliefs. This idea of "The Party" and "traitors" to the "The Party" is so 1984ish it's scary.
