A suspected drunken driver traveling in the wrong direction on Highway 101 and a man who tried to help her were both killed when they were hit by numerous cars in San Mateo, triggering a 15-hour backup on the freeway, authorities said today.

Stacy White, 39, of San Mateo and Steven Pereira, 26, of Dunnigan (Yolo County), were killed in the crash, which happened at about 3 a.m. Sunday, the San Mateo County coroner's office said.

The incident began when White was driving her Saturn north in the southbound lanes of Highway 101 near Hillsdale Boulevard while apparently under the influence of alcohol, the California Highway Patrol said.

White stopped her car near the East Poplar Avenue exit and got out. Pereira saw her as he was driving south and got out of his car.

But a limousine hit both White and Pereira, knocking them into the northbound lanes, where they were struck by several cars, including a CHP cruiser, authorities said.

The limousine driver stopped. No citations have been issued pending the results of the CHP's investigation.
