Nelson: 'It Would Be Very Hard For Me To Support' Allowing Tax Cuts For The Rich To Expire

Ben Nelson (D-NE), the most conservative of the Senate's 59 Democrats, became the first in his party to say he might side with Republicans on the Bush tax cuts, suggesting he might filibuster a tax bill that allowed tax cuts for the rich to expire.

"It would be very hard for me to support that," Nelson told reporters outside the Senate chamber before a vote this evening.

Afterward, TPM asked him what tools he would use to ensure that the tax cuts for the rich are extended. "My vote," he said.

Nelson's not alone.

With a major political fight brewing over tax cuts for the rich, and all Bush tax cuts set to expire at the end of the year, key Senators today sought to clarify their positions on the main options before of them: should the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans be allowed to expire? Or should all the Bush tax cuts be extended, at least temporarily.

2. It Isn't About Votes
Think about it only 2% of the population is what we are talking about. They would rather sell out 98% of us to give more money to wealthy people. We are living in a dictatorship of the rich and becoming more feudal every day. Best of all tricks is the poor people are ready to vote in a Republican majority that will take away any support systems for their very existence during these hard times. Someone needs to test the water, Americans are getting more ignorant by the hour.

4. Well at least we know...
..that Reid and Obama will stand up to him and not cave in to his demands, since they both have a proven track record of not doing so.

sigh.....

There's just no sarcasm tag big enough to follow that statement.

5. He should never get the choice.

If the House doesn't pass an extension of the bush cuts, the Senate can do nothing. If the House only passes cuts for the middle class and poor, the senate can pass, try to put them back in, or reject. And if they reject then others can run against them next time on that point.

It is really up to the House. I hope Pelosi holds the line. And I hope there are enough senators to keep them from putting the rich back into the package.

6. Maybe Ben Nelson needs to be on the minority side of the aisle for
a while. Why does he bother calling himself a Democrat? Is it some political reality in the state of Nebraska?

7. He is.
But I hear Democrats must vote for people like this or we aren't sufficiently loyal and are crazy.

10. I'll ask again
WHY is Ben Nelson allowed to call himself a Democrat when he pretty much votes against EVERYTHING the Dem leadership put forward?
