That said, there was a time when no one would have thought twice about Grandma giving a little "hot toddy" to a fussy child with a cold or Dad giving the curious child a sip of beer to stop their "begging." But cigarettes, pot, or drugs--very different and indefensible IMO.

5. Very sad. Having said that,

I certainly had a lot of beer sips and drink sips when I was very young. I was also told that it was routinely done among my parents' friends to keep the kids quiet or help them sleep while the parents had parties. Not huge crazy parties, but late backyard talks on summer nights. I do think that the current social climate has a lot more meanness in it, and there are a lot more clueless parents who do this kind of stupid shit to laugh at their children, to tape it and put it on youtube, and because they have a poor sense of empathy.

I realize that this is very much an "OK for me, but not for thee" post, as well as a little "off the lawn, you kids" and "good old days" thrown in.
