Tapes transport vet back to '45 (update)

WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER

When 90-year-old Frank Dinovo heard voices rise Monday from the spinning records that had been lost since World War II, his lips curled into a smile and his mind drifted back in time.

If only for a few minutes, he was 25 again — and a sailor in the U.S. Navy.

A rare coincidence had his young bride's two brothers, stationed elsewhere, taking a military leave in the same spot as Dinovo.

The trio celebrated heartily near Pearl Harbor, knowing that in wartime the reunion could be their last. They wound up at a USO club, putting their voices onto discs that Dinovo would mail to his wife, Mary, in Council Bluffs.

“Don't laugh,” a stammering Dinovo told his wife at one point during the 1945 recording. “I'm having a hard time thinking of something to say.”

If it were just the two of them together, he teased, he would not be at a loss for words.
