Pentagon Starts to Bargain Hunt

Associated Press

Defense Secretary Robert Gates told reporters at a Pentagon news conference Tuesday that the military will begin factoring in affordability before committing to a purchase. Any contracts exceeding $1 billion will be scrutinized in particular for ways to keep costs down. And when looking to spend money, the military will try to do more comparison shopping, Gates said.

unhappycamper comment: If you want to go after really low hanging fruit, drop your lower limit to $500 million dollars. Right off the top of my head:

Drop the $40 billion dollar USS Gerald R. Ford.
Drop the $500 million dollar LCS ships.
Drop the $536 million dollar National Security cutters.
Drop the $243 million dollar F-35s.
Drop the who knows how many billion dollar new bomber program.
Stop buying 'stuff' from Federal Prison Industries.
