Mubarak Greenlights Eight Nuclear Plants (NO. . . . . )

http://counterpunch.com/baky09152010.html

Egypt Going Nuclear

-snip-

Egypt's ambitious nuclear programme will see eight nuclear plants constructed by 2028. The first will begin operation in 2019, at an estimated cost of $4 billion, followed by another three by 2025.

-long snip of pros and cons-
---------------------------------------

Egypt already has a growing fresh water loss. nuke plants suck up a lot of water. these will have to use desalted salt water.

numbers of people will make large money off this. weather the people ever get electricity is another thing.

1. Good Lord... could there be a better area for solar?
and a more frightening prospect for nuclear terrorism? Damn... Too bad we shot our wad on our imperialistic aims under Bush*.. We might have had the financial and moral influence needed...

3. Egypt will get energy AND water
Nuclear energy is always a big money-maker, even after decades of FUD and ignorance.

One of the things Egypt will use the nukes for is water desalinization.

Counterpunch won't tell you about that. Because Counterpunch is dedicated to keeping the radical chic political fads of the Disco era alive.

http://www.haaretz.com/print-edition/news/a-nuclear-reactor-in-egypt-1.1594">from Ha'aretz:
The vital need for Egypt to have reactors is in the sphere of water desalination, he says, and and that is more important for Egypt's survival than reactors for electricity. In an interview with the newspaper Al Youm al Sabaa, he warned that the water in Lake Nasser, created by the Aswan Dam, will last only for 300 years before evaporating completely.

"numbers of people will make large money off this."

And that's bad?

There are several wind and solar projects in Egypt costing billions of dollars. They're making people rich, too. The profits are huge. The problem is that unlike the reactors, the solar and wind projects are too small to do any serious desalinization. But for nukes, all it takes is a subsystem to use "waste" heat.
