No more secret ballots in New York
'Secret' is out amid ballot woes

By SALLY GOLDENBERG and JENNIFER FERMINO

Civic-minded New Yorkers yesterday came face to face for the first time with the future of voting, but glitches and gaffes -- and a shocking lack of privacy that left many ballots not so secret -- had many mourning the loss of the lever.

The debut of the city's optical-scan voting machines -- the first change in the system in 80 years -- featured long lines, delays in opening polling places, clueless election workers and some brand-new machines on the fritz.

"What are they going to do for a presidential election?" groused one Manhattan voter after casting her ballot at a nearly empty polling site and enduring delays.

3. I voted yesterday in NY
I walked in. Got my ballot. Filled it out. Fed it to the machine and walked out. Entire process took just as long as before. The great thing about it is that they only really need 1 machine for an election site instead of 1 per party per election district (minimum 2).

8. I had only one issue yesterday in NY. Several weeks ago, I got
a brochure in the mail explaining the new optical scan voting procedure (with pictures). The last step said (and showed) that after a ballot was read, the screen would display the names of those I voted for and would ask me to touch the screen button to confirm my choices.

When I voted yesterday and inserted my ballot into the scanner, all that came up was "Thank you for voting". I called an election worker over and asked about the confirmation screen that was described in the brochure - he knew nothing about it.

I want my levers back.
