Senate Republicans rally against Dream Act

WASHINGTON — Senate Republicans voiced opposition Wednesday to a move by Democrats to tack onto a defense bill a measure that could provide citizenship to illegal immigrants serving in the U.S. military.

The so-called DREAM Act amendment would also clear the way for students who were brought into this country illegally to gain citizenship after succeeding or excelling in school.

Cornyn said adding it to the defense bill, “which already contains an unwarranted repeal of ‘Don't Ask, Don't Tell,' is cynical and transparently political.”

Although it once enjoyed bipartisan support, lawmakers since have divided along party lines, with Democrats urging passage of the measure.
