If you are in Mexico, I am incredibly jealous...get out tonight and enjoy the festivities. Just be careful!

3. ...

The Mexican War of Independance (1810–1821) was an armed conflict between the people of Mexico and the Spanish colonial authorities which started on 16 September 1810. The Mexican War of Independence movement was led by Mexican-born Spaniards, Mestizos and Amerindians who sought independence from Spain. It started as an idealistic peasants' rebellion against their colonial masters, but finally ended as an unlikely alliance between mexican ex-royalists and mexican guerrilla insurgency.

5. Well, you beat me to it...
every semester, when I get to the Battle of Puebla, I make my students repeat after me: Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Battle of Puebla, and NOT Mexican Independence.

That's not dumb, you've just picked up on misinformation spattered all over by the corporate media.

15. A brief history of Mexico that recently came out is...
Jurgen Buchenau´s Mexico Mosaic: A Brief History of Mexico. This will give you a nice overview. Older classics like Prescott's Conquest of Mexico are time honored; Friedrich Katz wrote an 1100 page bio on Pancho Villa. El Gran Pueblo: A History of Greater Mexico is also pretty good.

If you want specific stuff on Indians, or a certain event/person/time period, let me know.

32. Nah, nothing specific.
I was in California a few weeks ago, admiring an old Spanish Mission. I was thinking about how it's so much older than much of PNW, where much of the Western history doesn't go back much more than 150 years. Then I was thinking even Californian history doesn't compare to that of Mexico.

20. Today I also celebrate my favorite uncle who took time out from the World Cup
in Guadalajara one year to take me to see the Orosco murals. He was lame and couldn't really walk very far but far enough that day to get a cab and stump around the exhibit until I got it. This is some of Orosco. :toast:

33. Depends what you mean by "the US".
Not the entrenched State Department that sees everyone else as fair game, that's for sure.

The American people themselves, that's another story. Beleaguered as we've been for thirty years and more while our pockets were being picked and we were being blamed for it, I still don't give up on us. That's Santa Cruz, CA, not DF.
