My Ex-Gay Life With Christine O'Donnell

by Michelle Goldberg

Wade Richards helped Senate nominee Christine O’Donnell rail against gay rights—until he came out. He tells Michelle Goldberg how O’Donnell abandoned him, and how her lesbian sister helped him accept his sexuality.

A little more than 10 years ago, Wade Richards, a tormented, deeply religious 20-year-old gay man, took his Bible school tuition money and used it to fly to Los Angeles to join forces with Christine O’Donnell, a budding Christian right activist. O’Donnell, a former spokeswoman for Concerned Women for America, had founded an organization called The Savior’s Alliance for Lifting the Truth, or The SALT, in 1996; it was meant to organize young people around opposition to abortion, sex education, and homosexuality. Richards had just graduated from an ex-gay rehab program and had been interviewed about it on 20/20. Ostensibly cured, he got in touch with O’Donnell and became The SALT’s outreach coordinator and spokesman on homosexuality.

The SALT wasn’t much of an organization. It was run out of O’Donnell’s apartment, where Richards lived for his first month in California, and the two of them seemed to be its only employees. But O’Donnell was good at getting publicity. She appeared frequently on Politically Incorrect and other talk shows, and the two of them toured the country, giving press conferences and speaking at churches and colleges about sexual purity and curing homosexuality. Richards, though, was having doubts, which he confided to O’Donnell. “I told her, ‘You know, Christine, I’m still super struggling with same-sex attraction,’” he says. “‘I don’t really know if this is real, if I can really be this changed person that I’m going around the country speaking and saying that I am.’” She paid little attention, he says. Campaigning against gay rights was too central to her mission.

O’Donnell “totally turned her back on me. I never heard from her ever again.”

It still is. Battling Mike Castle for the Republican Senate nomination in Delaware, O’Donnell spread innuendo about her opponent’s sexuality. A firm her campaign employed released an ad that baselessly accused Castle of cheating on his wife with a man, and O’Donnell accused Castle of “un-manly tactics” and told him to “put his man-pants on.”

For O’Donnell, such gay-baiting was very much in character. Toward the end of the Clinton administration, she protested the appointment of James Hormel to be ambassador to Luxembourg, a posting the religious right opposed because Hormel was gay. “The SALT was concerned about Hormel’s ties to the pedophile-rights movement,” her website said, though there was not a shred of evidence behind the slur. In 1997, in a clip recently unearthed by Talking Points Memo, she appeared on C-SPAN, where, looking fresh, lovely, and innocent, she objected to AIDS sufferers being called “victims” because the disease is the product of their own actions. In an appearance on Fox in 2000, she exclaimed over the horrors of New York’s gay pride parade: “They’re getting away with nudity! They’re getting away with lasciviousness! They’re getting away with perversion!”

O’Donnell’s demonization of gay people is especially striking given the fact that, according to Richards, she has a sister who is openly lesbian. Indeed, it was meeting her sister, he says, that helped him begin to accept his own sexuality. “What helped me really come to grips was that her sister is an open lesbian and was living in L.A. and was in a long-term relationship and was working with a youth organization,” he says. “By hanging out with her, I saw, wow, she has a pretty normal life.” Being gay, he started to realize, needn’t condemn him to a life of seedy anonymous hookups, drug abuse, and nihilism.

They have no sense of hypocrisy or decency. To people like O'Donnell and her supporters hate is a virtue.

Why the fuck is this woman being Duked? Some of these people are just as crazy and just as evil as O'Donnell.

12. She's Not The "Establishment"
We're seeing the revenge of the Teabaggers. The party elite...the Boners, McConnells et al were in love with the bomb throwers as long as they were lobbing their grenades at the President and Democrats. They funded them and eventually the monster began to devour them. They woke up to see that rushbo and dreck were now calling the shots and Mooselini was going rouge all over their hand-picked candidates. At first it was a minor irritant but as the baggers have knocked off one establishment pick after another, the feather are getting ruffled and the divide is starting to really show. The GOOP is a party fractured by its very different constituencies...the neo-cons, the religious right and the gun nuts...that are united in hatred, racism and xenophobia. It's been a race to the bottom to "whip up the base" by moving further right and out of touch...and that's now starting to bother the establishment.

Should O'Donnell win...or any number of these baggers, this will shake up the status quo inside the beltway. Since many of the "newbies" were elected despite leadership, they will hold no allegience to the good old boys. That could set up some very interesting times...especially going into 2012.

O'Donnell is a threat to the GOOP power elite...thus I'm not surprised about the dump going on. It's not like this is being manufactured...it's been in the op research files for quite some time. The fun is going to be if O'Donnell loses and the subsequent blame game. It could lead to the ultimate cage match of the Thrilla from Wasilla vs. Big Bad Mitch Pruneface McConnell.

31. Here's a small clip of it
From Politico's Ben Smith:

A conservative firm until recently employed by the Delaware primary campaign of conservative Christine O'Donnell against Rep. Mike Castle casually leveled an extraordinary — and unsupported — charge of a gay affair against Castle in a video posted to its website today, the ugliest salvo yet in an extremely bitter primary.

The newscast-style video on Liberty.com features a woman seated before a backdrop of Liberty.com's Las Vegas headquarters, criticizing Castle and praising O'Donnell.

"Isn't Mike Castle cheating on his wife with a man?" asks a voice off-screen.... "That's the rumor," answers the newscaster.

And he supplied a short clip of the exchange on YouTube:

Edited on Thu Sep-16-10 10:57 AM by elleng
'She did not grow up as a strict Catholic, but rather came to a turning point in college, after, in her words, "drinking too much and having sex with guys with whom there wasn't a strong emotional connection".<4> She became increasingly interested in both politics and religion.<8> She became an evangelical Christian, began preaching sexual abstinence and joined the College Republicans.<4><10>'

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christine_O'Donnell#cite_note-evolution-3

O'Donnell decided then to drop her acting ambitions (she was a theater major). She became an evangelical Christian, a departure from her relatively lax Catholic upbringing. She joined the College Republicans and campaigned for the Bush-Quayle ticket.

That was the beginning of O'Donnell as crusader. Her biggest crusade has become preaching abstinence until marriage to young women.

"Not only because I think I'm right," she said in 2004. "I know what it's like to live a life without principle."

She is quite nuts, but faith somehow excuses that to most people. She's rolled that into celebrity. She gained fame by being a goto person when media needed to balance sanity with nuttiness. And there was Christine, the spokesperson for the Concerned Women.

If I jerked off every hour, it wouldn't indicate a mind as dirtyy as Christine O'Donnell's.

Well, she did say she was sleeping around with men SHE didn't have any emotional relationship with. This does not say that the men she was sleeping around with didn't want more than sex from her, but it is meant to imply they were cads, I think. She has yet to find one she has any "emotional" relationship with that I can see. I just don't think men are her favorite things. I mean, in her own words she bonked a number of them and got nothing from it.(if that's true) She obviously thinks gay men are lesser creatures. I don't think she likes men.

20. Oh, but she's all different now
There was a clip on NBC last night of Miss O'Donnell being asked about some of her loonier pronouncements from the past. She airily dismissed them with a wave of her hand saying that what she said then was a product of her youth, and that her views have matured since then. Will anyone have the temerity to ask Miss O'Donnell point-blank about any of these things? Does she stand by (for example) her statement that we need a whole lot more prayin' and bible studyin' in our public schools so that the kids don't shoot each other anymore? What is her "mature" take on AIDS these days?

Will we see substantive questions asked, or will the popular media be too preoccupied with the amazing "success" of the Tea Baggers to bother with such minutiae?

Perhaps not literally, but sex sells, and if you take the "con" side, that sex is evil, anybody who opposes you is a perv. And she's got the most extreme position to hurl from short of being a Shaker.

Orwell fans take note. Here is thought crime and the Anti-sex League come to life. When I first read 1984 as a teenager, I thought it was an entertaining satire. Over the years it became more of a manual of social pathology. A work of genius.

She didn't get to where she is today without knowing how to manipulate communications.

43. I wonder if KKKarl rejects her for the same reasons Wade does?
You know I'm sure that KKKarl was involved with Jeff Gannon's access to the White House... So hmmm...

52. From Wiki's article about her...
"She did not grow up as a strict Catholic, but rather came to a turning point during college after she found herself drinking excessively and engaging in sexual relationships with men whom she lacked a strong emotional connection to."

So she's 41 and unmarried, in spite of having been apparently quite promiscuous at one time in her life. Not that there's anything wrong with being single, it's just that in her case my gut is screaming that there's waaaay more to this picture than is being told. One thing is certain, whatever her sexual orientation may be, she has not accepted it. She seriously needs therapy.

as well as STD's. This could get very humorous

54. She's just another Limpball and Fox Noise creation.
Just like Sarah Palin. No one had heard of either of them until Limpballs started talking about them on his show. They are his little spawns conceived and pushed out at us by his feverish sick mind. I suspect his new trophy wife is a lot like them.

Fox just jumped on the band wagon and that is why she won. The hate mongers threw a lot of hate her opponent's way and their monster Christine was born.

But unlike the RepubliCON Primaries, the general election is not controlled by Limpballs and Fox Noise. Their little monsters have to actually win what passes for general elections in the US. And so far, NONE of them have won any general elections.

Let's keep it that way.

55. This is a sick severely repressed woman.
Who in their right mind would choose to abstain from sex for most of their adult life? It isn't healthy, it's unnatural and it's an indication that something is deeply wrong with her. Chances are she has been a victim of abuse, probably by a family member in her past.

60. According to Rachel, she worked with/for Phyllis Schaffley ---
---another whack-job loony-tunes. And does anyone else notice a remarkable physical resemblance to Sister Sarah? They might be allies now, but knowing what we know about Failin' Palin, she'll soon be insanely jealous of someone younger who's stealing her thunder.

61. The Tea-baggers remind me of a lynch mob.
They demonstrate many of the same characteristics of a Southern Lynch mob incited by lies from Sally Mae that she is the victim of rape by a innocent Black man to cover up her incestuous relations with her half-wit brother. There are many parallels. Just substitute Black for Homosexual; sexual perversion for sex education, Christianity purity for Muslim, to excite the mob. I lived in the South and saw Lott pull this type of crap time and time again and watch the rubes fall for it since it played to their prejudices and most especially excuse their own abject failure in every aspect of their own life.

She's one of "America's Christless Christians" who has discovered the profitability of milking right wing extremism.
