So the first American journalist ever forced to go into hiding because of death threats arising from her lawful exercise of free speech has been gone for a few days now, and we've yet to see a single statement from a political leader, or a single newspaper editorial, condemn this grotesque violation of American values.
I find it almost unfathomable that this could happen. I would have imagined that this kind of threat to everyone's right to free speech would have resulted at minimum in a statement from the President asserting the importance of free speech, and promising to go after those who threaten our rights, and promising to protect anyone unfairly targeted by them. It would have caused a great hue and cry, I'd have thought.
But no, almost nothing at all has been said. The victim is told that the authorities will not protect her, that she has to change her identify, and live her life as though she is in the witness protection program, except without any support from the government.
Great. So is this how Americans intend to protect their right to free speech? By telling people unfairly victimized by fatwas that they had best disappear, nice knowing you, too bad.
Where is the outrage?
