O'Donnell Said She Practiced Witchcraft
Last night, Bill Maher played a previously-unaired 1999 video clip of Delaware U.S. Senate candidate Christine O'Donnell (R) in which she said she once "practiced witchcraft."

Said O'Donnell: "I dabbled into witchcraft -- I never joined a coven. But I did, I did... I dabbled into witchcraft. I hung around people who were doing these things. I'm not making this stuff up. I know what they told me they do... One of my first dates with a witch was on a satanic alter, and I didn't know it. I mean, there's little blood there and stuff like that. We went to a movie and then had a midnight picnic on a satanic altar."

Maher joked that he's going to show a new clip of O'Donnell every week on his show until she agrees to appear on his show again.

Said Maher: "I'm just saying, Christine, it's like a hostage crisis, every week you don't show up, I'm going to throw another body out.

I saw it growing up around fundamentalists in the South with alarming regularity. It's almost a modus operandi for certain fundie-types.

"One time, before I converted, I was the high priest for a coven of Satan worshippers, we sent a pack of witches to a church in the next county and tried to burn it dow..." Stories like you'd hear from a fifth grader with an active imagination, and everybody gets in on it.

There's no honest confusion of wiccans and Satanists (or dishonest confusion, for that matter). It's just people making shit up from whole cloth -- Christian ghost stories, if you will.
