The real source of the new DNC logo: Obama Remarks
Edited on Sat Sep-18-10 10:23 AM by MineralMan
Many people seem to have missed this, so, for those, here's where the new logo originated.

President Obama spoke at a fundraiser in Texas, back in August. Among his remarks were these:

"If you have a car and you want to go forward, what do you do? You put it in 'D,'" Obama says to laughter. "When you want to go backwards, what do you do? You put it in 'R.' I'm just saying. That’s no coincidence. We are not going to give them the keys back."

In his remarks, he also strongly attacked Republicans for their obstructionism. This made the news, but wasn't a big story. Still, I believe it is the source of the circled D logo. Check your car. See?

Let's go forward; let's all put it in D!

3. I kind of like the retro feel
Almost WWI, like a Sopwith camel. And I'm glad to see serifs getting some screen time in the tagline.

8. I remember that now..
thanks for the reminder, Mineral Man. The Obama Admin has gotten this country out of the ditch and is driving it forward which is driving the recons nuts..they so want to take away the car and crank it in reverse.

9. When you put your car in D, here's what happens:
You press on the accelerator and the car moves forward, slowly at first, but it automatically shifts into higher gears as you go, eventually reaching the highest gear as it speeds up. Like your car, the country cannot suddenly go from a standstill to 100 mph. There's a process involved, that involves shifting gears to avoid overloading the engine.

We're about to shift into second gear. Let's not let the car be slammed into R. That can destroy the transmission, and keep us from going anywhere at all.

11. I Hate Both The Symbol And The Namby-Pamby Slogan, As Well.

Both are perfect examples of the lame-assed attitude that a catatonic stupor is the proper response to the Crazy Right Wing's energized attempts at a national takeover.

I trust I've made myself clear........

12. A logo fails if it has to be explained.

16. It didn't have to be explained to me. I remembered President
Obama's remarks very clearly, and recognized the logo at once. I was just trying to explain it for those who had missed those remarks.

14. That was why it made me think of a push button gear shift
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=9143389&mesg_id=9143423

But I still think the design is weak and poor graphics design. That is why I made my own version and I'm using that for my avatar.

22. Thanks - the idea came from comments from back during the Kerry campaign
On a publishing form, some of the graphics designers critiqued the Kerry campaign posters. They did not like the all blue images and wanted red, white and blue to elicit patriotism. They particularly wanted some red in the design since it gives a feeling of strength.

The Obama graphic was much better, so I thought it would be good combined with the new Democratic "D" logo. I think the blue should be darker on the "D" but I got tired of messing with it and stopped at this point.

15. Sorry Mr. President (as well as Mr. Man), I don't like the logo.
Do I want to move the Party forward? Absolutely, as long as the Party remembers from where we came. I think the donkey is evocative of our labor roots even though that is not what the donkey represents.

Am I glad they redesigned the site to make it very usable and productive for the Keyboard Coalition? Yes, it's very well done and I thoroughly appreciate it.

Do you have my vote? Unqualified yes. Do the Democrats in Arizona, for whom I'm giving time and money and even blood and PLENTY of sweat, have my vote and unqualifies support? Absolutely.

But I don't like the logo. that doesn't mean I all of a sudden hate the Democrats.

I feel let down. I'm bitching, moaning--and apparently whining, as I heard from another DUer. So be it. I've given enough time and money to this organization to be qualified to do so.

Thanks for the opportunity to do so again.
