Montana GOP Policy: Make Homosexuality Illegal
HELENA, Mont. — At a time when gays have been gaining victories across the country, the Republican Party in Montana still wants to make homosexuality illegal.

The party adopted an official platform in June that keeps a long-held position in support of making homosexual acts illegal, a policy adopted after the Montana Supreme Court struck down such laws in 1997.

The fact that it's still the official party policy more than 12 years later, despite a tidal shift in public attitudes since then and the party's own pledge of support for individual freedoms, has exasperated some GOP members.

"I looked at that and said, 'You've got to be kidding me,'" state Sen. John Brueggeman, R-Polson, said last week. "Should it get taken out? Absolutely. Does anybody think we should be arresting homosexual people? If you take that stand, you really probably shouldn't be in the Republican Party."

Gay rights have been rapidly advancing nationwide since the U.S. Supreme Court struck down Texas' sodomy law in 2003's Lawrence v. Texas decision. Gay marriage is now allowed in five states and Washington, D.C., a federal court recently ruled the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy unconstitutional, and even a conservative tea party group in Montana ousted its president over an anti-gay exchange in Facebook. ..........(more)

flathead valley. this makes me ashamed of a state that I spent a great childhood in.

How in the name of any minute speck of reasoning can the Republican fucking party decide to outlaw a creation of God?!!! didn't God create mankind?

God made man in his image...Everything on this planet is the creation of god and was created to fulfill God's PLAN!

The GOP (God only party?) can chose which of God's creations to outlaw! Where do I sign up???? Who do I vote for? Will Sarah be there judging people?!!!

4. Why would this make you ashamed of Montana?
is the Republican party less neanderthal in other states?
Democrats hold all statewide offices here and the legislature is closely divided.

3. I saw this months ago...
Anyways, another hilarious quote from a Repuke who can't decide if he's playing dumb or if he is dumb.

Does he even know the shit that goes on in his own party?

5. Wow...They even have the same typo from when I read the platform 6 months ago.
"Youth Court should focus on responsibility and accountability through immediate, consistent, enforceable, and avoidable consequences for those who violate the law."

That's consistent with the Bush Administration.

7. "I want to get the government off my back and into your bedroom"
Is the GOP having trouble framing a coherent message?
