"Churches should stop raising 'nice boys' and raise warriors instead"
On this morning's Fox and Friends broadcast, guest Doug Giles, a conservative theologian and pundit, warns against what he sees as examples of discrimination against men throughout US culture. Churches should stop raising 'nice' boys and, instead raise 'warriors' to combat terrorism. He alleges that schools are controlled by the 'feminist agenda.'

"You look at the culture, the movies, the television, and it always shows boys and men being these morons that a woman or a gay man has to take by the hand and lead us through the fog or we're not going to make it. In the education system you see the lack of competition. They want to eradicate sports. They want to get rid of grading. They want everybody to be equal. If a boy acts out, let's put him on drugs instead of that being of that young man. We want to get him doped up and turn his testosterone, effectively, off," says Giles

On the treatment of boys by religion, Giles says, "The church doesn't help matters either. The church is known for raising 'nice' boys. I don't know about you, Steve, but when I was young, I didn't dream of growing up and being 'nice.' I wanted save a nation, slay a dragon, something great, be a fireman, a policeman, save a damsel in distress."

As an alternative, he calls for churches "to go back to the biblical example. Like David. David was a warrior. You know, Moses, he was a tough, rowdy guy. He defied Pharaoh and all of his hosts. You know , Jesus wasn't a bearded lady. He fashioned a whip, threw out the money changers, stood for truth, led in difficult time periods. I think, given the war on terrorism and the aggressive secularism that's trying to ramrod traditional American values out of our nation, I think, we need men to be men nowadays and there is a systematic hatred of males that's going on in our culture."

4. Um, Doug, just because we hate YOU, that doesn't mean we hate MALES systematically.
These people who want to raise Christian warriors make me nervous (even though I mock them).

5. Being nice isn't "great?"

God I despise these fake xtians.

Oh, and Jesus...yep that guy...screw the whole "blessed are the peacemakers" crap. He threw out the money changers! (Let's not critically analyze that act too much. We don't want to make the corporatists upset).

When will the real theologians start to stand up and put the lie to these morons?

that my husband had fun bantering with on our front porch a few years ago. Needless to say, my sweet, smart hubby got the better of the guy verbally (and biblically), tying all his simplistic arguments into knots. As the guy left in a huff, he issued this threat:

"When Jesus comes back, me and him are gonna come back here and kick your ass!"

OMG--I'm laughing again at the memory!

As a ex-Catholic, I do try to respect other religions, but when you say things like these guys, you lose all credibility and piety with me.

There is this perverse opposition to any humanity on the right. It's just horrible.

12. Gee Doug
If you wanted to be a hateful, vengeful asshole, how did you get mixed up with Christianity? Re-read Jesus' sermons on the mount and on the plain (Matthew 5-7 and Luke 6-7) and see if you come to some other conclusion about the main tenet of Jesus' message. (Hint: It wasn't hit 'em hard, hit 'em often and hit 'em continuously.)

Moses, the murderer.

How about
Abram, who was ready to let a Pharoah have his wife?
Or Lot, who offered his daughters to a crowd to do whatever they wanted with them?
Or Lot, the same guy, who later got drunk and made babies with those same daughters?

I thought they were supposed to be trying to be like Jesus. He was a pretty nice guy.

I guess that's why they are so obessessed with the end times. According to their theology that's when Jesus comes back full of fire and brimstone. No more of this wimpy Jesus BS.

My grandpa was a raised a "nice Christian boy." He married his high school sweetheart, raised a family during the Depression. He served in WWI & somehow survived the Spanish Flu Pandemic. When he finally got grandkids, he found ways to sneak butterscotch candy to them (us) right under his daughter's (mom's) nose.

And I just bet that if he were alive today, he could kick your ass for saying that crap you said on Faux today.

21. Doug sez "Jesus wasn't a bearded lady." But if, in fact, Jesus is transcendent....
and in Him there is no east or west, or as Galatians 3:28 states: "...There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus..." Then I would submit that he is indeed a bearded lady. He is **all** bearded ladies.

Why can't these crackpot fundies ever get their own theology straight?

24. I didn't like his religious angle about things, but he did make a point
A lot of times boys are labelled as trouble for normal boy behavior at school. Boys are more likely to be labelled ADHD and the school will manipulate the parents into medicating them, by giving them the choice of getting meds or the kid will be put in special education and labelled emotionally impaired for the rest of his life.

And he was right about the research that shows that boys and girls do learn in different ways. I don't like to see schools segregated by gender, but for some classes, it might be a good idea, especially reading and math-a separate math class could be a benefit for girls, too.

And all kids, boys and girls alike, need physical activity to get rid of excess energy. Gym class needs to provide a channel for that energy. I had a very good gym teacher in elementary school who emphasized participation and fun. He would set up complicated obstacle courses in the gym on cold or rainy days, and on nice days, we ran laps around the playground, or we played team sports like dodgeball or soccer, that involved running around like little maniacs. Every kid's day needs to have a certain amount of time set aside to run around like a little maniac.

One of my coworkers was telling me about her kids gym class a few years ago-the focus was totally on "physical fitness" and an "individual life fitness plan". That's bullshit, and it's self-centered. Team sports are important for kids, to learn to play by rules and to learn that everyone has something to contribute.

Fundmentalists always lose me with the "christian warrior" crap. He had some good points to make without going there.
