Katy Perry Busts Out The Elmo Mockery on 'SNL'
Edited on Mon Sep-27-10 09:52 AM by Renew Deal

Pop music fans know Katy Perry as a sassy-sweet California Gurl, a red carpet eye-popper, a staunch defender of fiance Russell Brand and, this week, as a 'Seseame Street' reject whose garb was too sexy for broadcast.

Now, meet Maureen DiChico.

While Perry was in the 'Saturday Night Live' studios to be the season premiere's musical guest, she bounced (and bounced) onto the faux set of 'Bronx Beat' to be interviewed by host Amy Poehler and her fellow 'SNL' alum Maya Rudolph.

The gum-chomping ladies dished about the neighborhood scandal caused by young Maureen, the library volunteer asked to dress more modestly before reading storybooks to any more kids.

Winking at controversy certainly seems to come as naturally to Perry as singing, strutting and tweeting! Watch her 'SNL' sketch here.

1. Amy Poehler and Maya Rudolph do the best New Yawkah impressions I've ever heard
And I grew up in the outer boros (or boroughs, as the non-New Yawkahs say). It's amazing, really.

3. no talent ... trading on looks ... no sense of style ...
i think that about sums up Perry. i guess mocking those that don't approve of your ways is about par for the course and to be roundly cheered.

4. She certainly isn't very original--"sexy school girl uniforms"
Edited on Mon Sep-27-10 10:05 AM by hlthe2b
costuming for her musical performances. Gee where have we seen that before... ? Let's see, Madonna? Brittany Speers? and countless others?

I guess I just don't get what the hype is about her as she doesn't have much of a voice, nor is she a particularly good dancer. Nontheless, she certainly doesn't bug me like Justin Bieber does.

Take away their costume designers, beat box and vocoders, and what have you got? A nude cover shot of Rolling Stone...

12. perhaps she should get over that it wasn't the proper
audience for the outfit? i mean, you're into telling people to get over it...so maybe she should. And really? SNL is satire and parody? Damn...could have fooled me. Sarcasm tag assumed...

18. She doesn't look too upset to me
She threw on an Elmo shirt and now she's getting more hits and searches than ever.

She's an entertainer. As long as you get their name right, they don't care.

27.  Still six of one...
I imagine we apply a more positive label to our critiques, and a less positive label to those of others to better validate ourselves.

Still six of one...

31. no...i consider my critism pretty sharp
and unforgiving. i think if you have something you are upset about you should just say it rather than veil it in a skit on SNL...

22. Seems to be working for her
Seems like she enjoys the whole self parody thing and has no problem dressing to her parts. It does good business so shrug. I'm not a whole grumby Gus. Music stars in my day dressed either self mocking or for MORE exposure. So if it's working for her then good for her. Hope she stays away from the drugs that bring down far to many people in that profession.

6. I am certainly no prude and she can dress any way she wants, BUT
do it in the proper venue. These young kids like to emulate their favorite celeb and we have enough prosti-tot outfits already. Young kids dress like hookers and old people dress like toddlers :wtf:

everytime I hear it, I turn the station, especially when my granddaughter is in the car. I guess I'm showing my age...

Seems they are rubbing it in my face--how crappily UNwatchable SNL and Sesame/Elmo street have become in the past 20 years. :grr:

10. Is it me, or are all her songs starting to sound alike
I liked her first album, it had some catchy tunes and one particularly emotive ballad. But California Girls and this other one about forever young or something - sound exactly alike.

As bubble gum music goes, hers is good. There will always be a place for such music, because there are always new groups of young to mid teens.

It is what it is. Entertainment for teens.

17. If you're going to parody something, make it funny.
A better skit would have been showing the Sesame Street producers stepping in and canceling her appearance not for a revealing top, but because they think their target audience is too mature for her music.

I don't like the show or the artist, but anyone who can make fun of the American Taliban (leftwing or rightwing) is good with me.
