Witnesses say the boy's mother, Anitra Hankins, was questioned then handcuffed while her autistic son was wheeled down in a stretcher.
"There's cops with their guns draw talking to the lady upstairs. She was covered in blood," said next-door neighbor Christopher Tooze. "He had stab wounds all over him, really bloody and a big stab wound in his head."
Neighbors at Ashwood Village Apartments say Anitra always seemed like a kind, devoted mother. They say she had to bathe and feed her son and give him medication daily because of his condition.

Autistic boy undergoing surgery after being stabbed in Modesto
By Kevin Valine - kvaline @modbee.com
A 13-year-old Modesto boy was undergoing surgery Sunday night after being stabbed multiple times, and police had detained his mother, authorities said.
The mother called 911 about 6 p.m. to report that her son was hurt but refused to provide further details, Modesto police Sgt. Tim Helton said.
He said when officers entered the woman's home in the Ashwood Village Apartments at 2800 W. Rumble Road, they found her son lying in the hallway with his feet bound by rope. Helton said the boy had been stabbed multiple times.
The boy was taken by ambulance to Doctors Medical Center and was undergoing surgery late Sunday night. Helton said the prognosis is grim.
He said the 13-year-old boy is autistic.
Anitra Hankins was detained and is being questioned by police, Helton said. He said the investigation is in its early stages, but "this is not believed to be a random act. This is not the attack of a stranger."
