Everyone Hates Chris

Jurors on the Libby trial are learning many things about the inner workings of unofficial Washington. Just today they were told that "There are a lot of bureaus in Washington" (from Judy Miller's testimony on intial confusion about where Valerie Plame worked) and that the Chevy Chase Club doesn't allow cell phones or Blackberries on its grounds (from Matt Cooper's increasingly detailed narrative).

But today the Washington insiders at the trial learned something too: that Tim Russert hates Chris Matthews. It was the talk of the elevator as soon as the court recessed for lunch. This nugget of information will not play an especially large role in the trial, but I suspect it will make cocktail conversation afterwards a little more interesting, and of course, it shines a bit more unflattering light onto the deal-makig and string-pulling that go into producing what some still quaintly call "news."

Russert's presumed distaste for Matthews (so difficult not to speculate on its cause! Is it stylistic? Does someone hog the newsroom donuts?) came up in reference to the prosecution presenting notes taken by Libby during a conversation with former vice president aide Mary Matalin. She "has a colorful way of speaking" (something the press corps *does* know), and in the course of advising Libby on how to deal with the "Wilson issue," and in particular Matthew's attacks on the vice president, she advised Libby to call Russert to complain and she told Libby that Russert would have an especially sympathetic ear: "Call Tim. He hates Chris - he needs to know it all."

She also gave a talking point: "Wilson is a snake."

The prosecution wanted the jury to see this note, saying it went to "Libby's state of mind." The defense, wisely, choose to argue the note was prejudicial. "If they believe that Mr. Libby agreed with what Ms. Matalin was saying, they might think he'd do *anything* to get back at Wilson."

Exactly.

1. ALL evidence is prejudicial to somebody's case
If it helps one side's case, it hurts the other side. The question is whether it's unduly prejudicial.

Let's see here.

Some inside-the-main-stream-media-down-and-dirty talk.

Mr High and Mighty MTP holyer than thou Tim big shot Russert vs. Tweety-Mr-bow- at-the-feet-of-our-911-leader-who-bullhorned his way into Iraq??????

I want to see a big time wrestling match, with Walter Cronkite as the ref and Edward R. Murrow as the judge.

It's about time.....well overdue!

19. I agree. People wonder why Dems could never get a message out the last 10 years.
All they need to know is what is being revealed about the media in this trial.

Gore and Kerry never even had a CHANCE - and impeachment was a foregone conclusion for Clinton with this media crowd.

Katrina and Fitzpatrick have stripped many of the curtains away, didn't they?

all this time, too.

They all knew WH was lying for 17 months before an election, and they all kept quiet while Joe Wilson was under attack as a liar the entire time.

TWO Dem strategists KNEW and did NOTHING before an election. WHY?

Edited on Wed Jan-31-07 03:29 PM by blm
the entire time when they said no one leaked, because ROVE is the one who told Cooper. But through the entire campaign the WH played innocent while trashing Joe Wilson as a liar.

And all these news people KNEW the WH was lying and they stayed SILENT and protected them and let Wilson get trashed in the media by GOP spokespeople, the RNC and its operatives.

There is NO WAY that Carville and Grunwald didn't know - no way.

Now I just flashed on Carville's admiring Valentine to Rove in TIME's Man of the Year issue after the 2004 campaign.

Add this to what Carville did during the campaign when he called his wench of a wife, Matalin, to give her a heads up on a recount that Kerry was considering and this makes for a truly fucked up conspiracy.:grr: Carville needs to be banned from Democratic politics, me thinks! Geezus.

66. You would have to believe Carville was a lone wolf - I don't. Mandy Grunwald knew
Edited on Thu Feb-01-07 01:24 PM by blm
that the WH was lying since July 2003 and how did she handle that fact as a Democratic strategist? Let Rove and WH remained painted as the innocents and let Wilson get raked over the coals and smeared as a liar by the very people who committed the crimes.

I don't think Carville and Grunwald had the party's best interests in mind, at all. There was an overall lack of fight in 2004 from within the Dem party elite. They carefully stayed closer to Bush on major issues like Iraq and barely lifted a finger for Kerry in any demonstrable or effective way, whereas Bush had bignames like Giuliani , McCain and Dole on tv almost every night during the last few months of the campaign.

Nah - Carville and Grunwald weren't the only ones. But they were acting in concert with the Dem elite who did NOT want Kerry to gain control of executive power.

Here's a better view of WHY.

39. Just google on Matalin and WHIG for loads of fun
Matalin, after all, was a member of WHIG -- and even though she'd left the White House in December 2002, before the Plame business heated up, Fitzgerald called her to testify before the grand jury. She may yet play a part in this.

For example, one truly amazing item that came up when I googled just now was this firedoglake entry from September 30 2005(!).

http://firedoglake.blogspot.com/2005/09/its-still-miller-time.html

The tin foil hatter in me still thinks this is BushCo.'s attempt at pro-activity, throwing Libby under the bus (with Judy's full cooperation), and promising him a pardon on the other end if he takes the heat for all of them. He's the perfect villain. Nobody is going to have sympathy for some smirking, Ivy League, summer-in-the-Hamptons silver spoon clown named Scooter.

Here's the rub. And I've thought about this a lot today. In setting up Libby to take the fall, BushCo. can only guess what the tight-lipped Fitzgerald is sitting on. They really don't know, and can only base a strategy on what they THINK he's got. This is a very dangerous thing to do, because it is an attempt to cover up a conspiracy involving a lot of people (and Judge Tatel, in his decision to send Judy to the big house, called it "the plot against Wilson," so they already know it). It requires many, many people to lie in concert. Privately. Behind the closed doors of a grand jury. Who must both place their faith in BushCo., and risk going to jail for their efforts.

The more I think about it the more I don't think this Libby plan (if that's what it is) will hold. It would require an inveterate bunch of liars to coordinate those lies to a degree that their disaster management skills would indicate is thoroughly impossible. And it's a very risky thing to even attempt with a vast coverup involving people with conflicting goals (Tenet, Powell) and degrees of loyalty (Fleischer, Matalin, etc.)

Remember -- Bush really can't pardon everyone involved. Rove? Absolutely. Libby? Well now, probably. Ari Fleischer? Mary Matalin? She was a member of WHIG. Is she going to risk lying? Having the whole thing collapse on her?

But I bet Jon Stewart might love to have some fun with it...

59. The ENTIRE media is avoiding this part of the story like crazy. They will not accept
the blame for the distorted news and deliberate lies they have been feeding the public for the last 10 years in their efforts to protect BushInc at all costs.

tomorrow in effect saying Fitzgerald came in and trashed the place and it wasn't his to trash. :eyes:

The media is also smarting because how many fresh eyeballs is firedoglake getting and they are yukking it up on the front page and kos had his own fun with the dirt yesterday.

70. They will target Fitz the way they targeted Gore, Wilson and Kerry - corpmedia
does not let the truthtellers gain the wider audience and keep shooting at their credibility, because the truth exposes the years of LYING and covering up that the corpmedia has actively participated in to protect BushInc.

You should post the Atrios heads up on Broder as a separate thread so we can activate and battle it down. Media is putting their wagons in a tighter circle now that they are being exposed - but only exposed to those keeping tabs through the internet. Mainstream ain't saying a word.

63. "Wilson is a snake"
These people are unbelieveable. Matalin brands him a "snake" for telling the truth. I would love to see her get taken down in this thing. She disgusts me.

Actually the whole lot of them disgust me. The fact that there was a coordinated attack from the White House on a covert agent blows my mind completely, even now, 3 years later. There is no way this outing was accidental. I hope to God every one of these bastards are brought to justice for what they have done.

72. Unfortunately, that line of attack worked throughout 2003 and 2004 because the
corporate media - who already KNEW Wilson was telling the truth - allowed the attacks on his credibility to stand in their effort to protect Bush's 2004 campaign.
