1. That is how climate change is going to kill us. Drought and crop failure.

7. The meteorologist here is blaming it on EL Nino. On the news, he said
high pressure is keeping all of the precipitation in Oregon and Washington.

He did not explain whether global warming is influencing the El Nino pattern (which he said is warming of Pacific Ocean water off the coast of South America.)

14. Global warming is intensifying El Nino patterns.
It's also putting an end to seasonal snow-pack and glaciers, which account for major fractions of the water budget in several parts of the northern hemisphere.

In Australia, four farmers are putting a gun to their mouth every day because their crops and animals are dying from a "1000-year" drought.

26. It's odd that he would blame it on El Nino
Normally El Nino tends to have the opposite effect--wetter in California (especially Southern California) and drier than average in the Pacific Northwest.

El Nino has occurred periodically for hundreds of years, and probably longer. It is not caused by global warming, but I wonder if global warming could magnify its effects.

Edited on Wed Jan-31-07 05:11 PM by cboy4
a very wet pattern in California, or a very dry pattern, or something in the middle.

Obviously, it's on the dry side thus far, although he said we (in Calif.) can still have a wet Feb-Mar-Apr.

February of 1998 was VERY wet.

Weird.

13. Crap. We'll be over
from England visiting my family in Atlanta and NE Georgia for about six weeks in July/August this year. My dad already has insect life on his farm that seems like it approaches biblical proportions sometimes (I'd just about swear I've seen plagues of locusts there before). If it's worse than normal, I don't know what we'll do. My stepmother hates turning on the air conditioning so the choice is either stay inside and go quietly insane from the heat, or go outside and be eaten by bugs.

18. You might get lucky
last years heat was not too bad in July/August. Maybe you'll catch a break this year. -- maybe invest in one of those "easyup" screen rooms that are intended for campers for your Dad's backyard. Surely you'll pass a Target or sporting goods place on the way to Dad's from the airport. :)

warm here in NW Ohio the first part of the month. Now it is very cold and snowy; pretty much normal for this time of year. This weekend it is going to get down to 4°.

but we have days as of late where it can drop 20-30 degrees in a day. We've also had days where it is 60 one day and freezing rain the next.

6. We're getting the opposite.
The last six weekends in a row, we've been getting snow. We're still digging out from a blizzard that dumped nearly three feet of snow on us last July, and we're getting yet more snow today.

Part of the weather patterns may be global warming (yes, global warming will screw up our climate worse and worse as time progresses.) But right now, I'd say the majority of the screwed up weather is caused by El Nino.

I'm not sure how it translates if it is also the driest although there hasn't been much rain either.

15. Get your woollies out
A huge mass of cold arctic air is moving south over North Dakota. It'll move south and east but I don't know how far. Temps here will be -16°F by Sunday.

This isn't unusual weather for January. We've just been spoiled for the past couple of years.

It's very dry here, too. We've only had a few inches of fluffy snow while we should have had 32 inches by now.

17. Not mild, but definitely goofed up.
Although in a good way, for us. We had a terrible drought last year and this year we have gotten the snowiest winter in more than 50 years, so far. Also much more cold/damp weather than usual for northern NM.

Doesn't bother me, I grew up in MN. But definitely non-standard.

observantly,
Bright

In December & early January it was VERY mild. I went outside in a short sleeve t-shirt on a few occasions.

For the past 3 weeks however, it has been BITTERLY cold.

I'm sure this one of the driest winters on record here.

Yesterday, we did get a little rain- 1/4 to 1/2 an inch.

Our seasonal total here in OC is 1 1/2 inches,
7 inches below normal.

It has been cold here, too.
During our cold snap, the nighttime temps were in the
20's. Our citrus got hit bad.

We are in a drought.
