You do know you do not have to call the police if you see a "suspicious package"
the people who are playing the joke on Boston law enforcement probably called them, but I would think if you call one in and it isn't real the chance of you being charged with being part of the hoax is pretty good, and that could be a lot of money they want for all that.

1. Um...
One of these things was strapped to a major bridge, another to a major highway overpass, and another was right down the goddam street from my apartment.

These weren't McDonald's wrappers blowing in the wind.

Pssst...terrorism exists.

2. Of course it exists, I'm just saying there is a risk in making the call

let the next smuck make the call.

3. Well,
if I see something strapped to a goddam bridge, I'm going to call the cops. Sorry.

4. Ditto that --
I think it's sad that anyone would be discouraged from taking their safety into their own hands - I guess we should just leave it up to the government to keep us safe?

Bwahahaha... riiiight.

16. So calling the cops is not going to the government to keep us safe

as you put it? All I was saying is there is no requirement that you call the police because you saw something. The next person can do it.

27. NOT reporting something is essentially giving up what little power you
have to someone else, in the case of terrorism, you are handing it over to people like GW.

Calling the authorities, yes it puts fixing the problem in the government's hands, but at least you took some freaking initiative to protect yourself and your community.

I live in the greater Boston area and I am glad it was called in, even if it turned out to be nothing - it could have been "something" that could have effected me and people who are important to me.

6. I think the small risk of being blamed
is worth the thought that if indeed it WAS real, by calling ASAP you may have saved a whole lot of lives.

And unthinkably selfish.

17. The next "smuck" would be me.
Making a legitimate call about something that actually looks like a bomb runs no risk with the police.

18. And you don't think they will have an hour of questions about what you saw

What if there is a trial and you are called to be a witness, and have to be available for days upon days. No risk of that???

22. Been called three times

first time was 19, no one wants 19 year olds on a jury.

second time a cousin was a party to the suit.

third time my brother-in-law was one of the attorneys.

5. And a a big hospital...............
I am personnaly glad to see a huge reaction from the police. In the north east we HAVE to be hypervigilant about this stuff because we have huge amounts of people in a very small area. A dirty bomb here will do ALOT more damage then in the majority of the country.

What does that make you? Personally, I don't think I could live with that on my conscience. Let's just hope that this will be the last time any city experiences this kind of hoax.

12. Hmm
Terrorism 101 training anywhere around the world, and drilled into people in places where terror is a daily reality

If yuo see a suppicious package, CALL THE AUTHORITIES

So you are WRONG

By the way, I have called the cops... and the cops thanked me, even if all they got to do was BLOW UP a very new and EXPENSIVE laptop.

And you know what, NONE OF US was liable.

To say that the owner of sath machine was not happy is to put it midly, but hey... he did abandon the package by a load bearing wall on a very public mall

15. I agree, and if you see a child potentially being abducted, you should look the other way.
Edited on Wed Jan-31-07 04:22 PM by ET Awful
And, if you see an old lady being mugged, you shouldn't say anything either. Likewise if you see a teenage girl potentially being assaulted.

Hell, if you see someone pull a gun in a bank through the window as you walk by, you should probably keep walking.

Oh yeah, just in case someone missed it . . . :sarcasm:

23. Of course not. You should take the chance it might blow up and kill people
That's the responsible thing to do. Ignore the problem, don't get it checked out and if it goes off and something happens, laugh at all the dead people.

Is that what you meant?

26. Of course not
The citizens of this country bear no responsibility for each other. If something suspicious happens, ignore it. Go back to reading the paper.

Hey, if something bad happens, what's it to you anyway, right?

29. Of course not
We should ignore things like this.

I wonder what you would do if it happened near your home? Have kids, parents, friends in the area? Think you might ignore something that needs to be checked out then?

Ah, that's what was called in, a request to check something out.

32. Since this was a marketing venture, what better way to gin up publicity
than to plant stuff and call it in. What are the chances this is not just a marketing campaign mininterpreted by the public, but one that was really carried out with the reporting being part of the campaign? I don't put anything past companies anymore, especially since that poor woman died of water intoxication.

So what if it turned out to be a hoax & I was inconvenienced?

I would find it hard to live with if I did nothing & it turned out to be real, killing the "next smuck".
