My "discussion" with a Republican...
This, mind you, was an hour-long "discussion", so major snippage.

Immigration, his side: "The Liberals have screwed up this issue and allowed our borders to remain open."

My reply: "So, for the last 6 years we've had a Republican President and Republican-controlled Congress, and for longer than that Texas has had a Republican Governor and Republican-controlled state legislature, and you still think it's the Dems fault?"

Iraq, his side: "This is an all-voluntary military, they knew that they were risking their lives."

My reply: "They volunteered, confident that they would never be asked to risk their lives for a BS reason."

His reply: "There is a reason we went over there, they are just not telling us for national security reasons (I can't make that up)."

My reply: "Ever hear about the Project for a New American Century? All the major players in this admin are members. They've been wanting to attack Iraq for years, to get control of the Middle East and its resources."

His reply: "How do you ever find the time to get all your information? I don't even have time to read the newspaper."

My reply: "So your opinions are based on sound blips and mine on facts?"

His reply: Silence.

GAWD sometimes that just feels good.

8. Yeah, that one always chaps my ass too. How dare anyone imply that because
they volunteered, we somehow have no obligation to ensure that their sacrifice isn't taken for granted. I wonder how many people who declare this also have Support the Troops ribbons on their cars?

13. It's a way of calling them suckers. Disrepectful.
There shouldn't be a caveat emptor policy in dealing with the government. I know, but there shoudln't.

4. This is the one that makes me mad enough to fight
'Iraq, his side: "This is an all-voluntary military, they knew that they were risking their lives." '

Our boys are not fucking mercenaries. They are not the fucking hired help.

5. I'm not surprised at their responses...
I remember asking a Freeper guy about Bush's quote about how he wasn't concerned about bin Laden and didn't spend much time on him.

The Freeper's response was (I'm not making this up) - "It's a clever ploy by Bush to make Osama think the heat is off of him."

That was about 2 1/2 years ago. I guess the heat is still off?

7. Wow! I actually like the "secret reason" one
Edited on Wed Jan-31-07 04:00 PM by Patiod
I've heard it before, and damned if it's not a really good argument!!!!

I need to use this:

Why didn't I clean the kitchen? I would have, but I couldn't, and I can't tell you why I couldn't -- but be assured, it was for national security reasons.

Did I forget to buy wine while I was out shopping for dinner? No, I had a secret reason for not buying it, but for your own good, I can't tell you.

Am I cheating on you? No! I have to have secret overnight meetings with that George Clooney lookalike, and the fate of the free world may be at stake! Don't ask! I can't tell you why!!

9. I'm glad you came out of this feeling good
And you thought fast on your feet.

I am usually so blind-sided by their ignorance that I am
too STUNNED to think straight.

And if not stunned by their ignorance, by their convoluted and circular reasoning that allows for anything.

10. You should be ashamed of yourself
Using facts and all.
Using reality to refute emotion.
Using the cruel vise of logic to destroy a feeble position in a discussion.

It would appear that in a battle of wits, your opponent was unarmed.

19. He's actually quite smart, just un-informed.
He's a birdwatcher, can tell me the name of a bird just by my description. Loves birds.

Oh, and goes duck hunting all the time.:eyes:

11. The one to me that is most pathetic
The one about how they are there for reasons they are not telling us, national security reasons.

Submissive, he subscribes to the government-as-parent model - he's not into self government or the We the People have set up that government. No it's just there to protect him. Or discpline him (but he has nothing to hide).

He also said he listened to talk radio - both sides.

My reply: So which radio station is the lefty one here in Houston? I can't seem to find it.

21. KPFT-FM, Pacifica, 90.1 FM, but not really regular talk radio
I have to suscribe to XM in Houston to get Air America which pisses me off tremendously.

23. Maybe the government is allowing all the immigrants in
for security reasons and they just can't tell us why. Who knows, maybe they'll put them in the army or use them for cheap labor to make supplies for the troops. Arbeit macht frei!
