No tricks, big treat: a White House Halloween
By NATASHA T. METZLER, Associated Press
Sunday, October 31, 2010

(10-31) 16:47 PDT WASHINGTON (AP) --

President Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle, handed out Halloween treats to area children and military families at the White House Sunday evening.

Local students between 6 and 14 years old, along with children from military families, were invited to celebrate Halloween on the North Lawn.

The president and first lady, along with Mrs. Obama's mother, Marian Robinson, spent about 30 minutes passing out goodie bags. Obama wished each child a happy Halloween as he distributed the treats, pausing occasionally for hugs or to comment on costumes.

Later, the military families continued the celebration inside the White House.

The first couple joked to assembled reporters about children walking the long driveway in order to work off the snacks.

1. Did any other President let
Trick-or-Treating at the White House? It is just so cool that these residents do it. I know how much I loved going out with my sons when they were young, and I still miss it. Right now I'm at home and getting lots of Trick-or-Treaters at my door. I live in a very family-oriented neighborhood in Santa Fe. Lots of kids, and I think people come over to my block from some other areas. The kids are all adorable and I love it!

13. I think I remember hearing of it under other presidents, but I'm open to correction on that.
We actually had a decent number of kids this year; the last two there were like five because the Concerned Parents types whipped up a thick froth of paranoia. This year it was closer to sixty or so. Of course, we were one of three houses on the street with the lights on...
