At Least 20 Greyhounds Found Dead In Panhandle

EmailPrintERBO, Fla. -- Authorities are investigating the deaths of at least 20 dogs at a greyhound park in the Panhandle.

The Washington County Sheriff's Office arrested the dogs' trainer, Ronald Williams, on Friday and charged him with animal cruelty. A local greyhound adoption group alerted authorities that Williams had brought in eight underweight dogs, triggering an investigation by the Florida Department of Pari-Mutuel Wagering.

It's unclear exactly how many dogs were found dead at Ebro Greyhound Park. The park's assistant general manager Mark Hess says Williams' dogs were healthy during the season, which ended Sept. 25. Hess says Williams continued to come to the track every day to let out two dogs for exercise and told other trainers he had only those two left.

1. Dogs are NOT livestock.
And I don't approve of the way livestock is treated. I've been vegetarian for over 20 years. This is just wrong on way too many levels.

5. I think all animal racing, including horses, should be banned.
Running around a track so that people can gamble and be entertained.

6. It's evil
I can't stand the thoughts of how these gentle animals are treated. Disgusting, people who do this are less than human, they are nothing but vermin.

3. I was just at Ebro a few months ago. All the dogs I saw looked healthy but that was during the

season.

I was under the impression that the industry was regulated and the trainers were inspected regularly and had to provide documentation for all the dogs. And I remember reading that most of the trainers worked to find pet homes for their dogs after they retired them from racing.

I hate it that people like Williams ruin the sport of dog racing for everybody who participates responsibly.
