23% Sales Taxer on the bus

While I was listening to my iPod on the bus, I saw a guy talking to a woman who he obviously didn't know with some zeal. I muted to hear what he was talking about - and it was my favorite of topics, the 23% sales tax that is proposed by some of the nutters.

He was all into how simple it all was and how he didn't have to make his wife get him a bottle of coke and a 5th of rum to do his taxes (like yours are that hard, dude.)

Of course I came back at his points with the burden that places on the middle class and how the wealthy don't "spend" as much of their money as the mc, yada yada yada.

His response?
"Well, they don't pay that much in taxes anyways. And what about the illegal immigrants?" :wtf:

I said "what about them? You really think that a few illegals will make up for the wealthy?"

And being who I am (math-geek) :P I went home, looked at my taxes I pay yearly, and figured out that witha 23% sales tax, I personally would pay between 30 and 35% more in taxes.

Way to cut taxes, asshole.

Me and mom were driving to the store and to pass the time we began a mental calculation of what 23% on EVERY THING would amount to.

It was a sobering figure and we both thought, well if the middle class is hurting now, that stupid tax will be the nail in the coffin. It's over.

I hate these people with a passion.

I drive from my NC-4 home through NC-2 to get to work back in NC-4 every day (then take the bus the rest of the way in from Chatham Co.)

This dude is voting for her. I saw where he turned off.

If there's one way to kill a recovery, it is by making everything 23% more expensive - even if you are giving them more money from their paycheck. The psychological part of economics of the individual would be shattered.
