San Diego Gay Man attacked in Apparent Hate Crime

This happened just a few blocks from my home - which is a very GLBT friendly neighborhood.

SAN DIEGO -- North Park resident Jacob Harshbarger, 32, was attacked in an alley behind his home in the early hours of Sunday, Oct. 31.

Harshbarger, who is openly gay, says he believes the assault was hate motivated.

Harshbarger, who is now recovering at home, said he was diagnosed with a concussion, had 13 stitches placed in his split and swollen lips, has a black eye and bruising in the back of that eye, and other injuries.

After the brief exchange with the group, he recalls one of the individuals reading the provocative text on his T-shirt and immediately calling him a “f*****g faggot.”

It is the San Diego Gay & Lesbian News, though. I don't know, it may be their editorial style, for example, to bleep out expletives but not certain defamatory hate words, which are spelled out.

Whatever the case, the effect is jarring.

same is true of nearly all local news in San Diego.

8. It's everywhere, not just San Diego

Nobody reads these things before they are published. More and more, in local news, but even in national papers, I get the impression that the writer types up the story, hits send, and that is that. No fresh eye on hand to smooth out the rough edges anymore.
