Disappointed gays unlikely to shun Democrats
http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE69T19320101101

(Reuters) - Gay voters, disappointed with President Barack Obama's failure to do away with a ban on gays in the military, have pared back funding for Democrats in the midterm elections but are unlikely to abandon them at the polls on Tuesday.

One of the most vocal and affluent groups of the Democratic base, gay voters say they have received nothing in return for decades of loyalty to the party, even after two years of Democratic leadership in both the White House and Congress.

"We voted for Democrats. We gave them the House and the Senate, and what did we get?" said John Aravosis, editor of the left-leaning blog AMERICAblog.

Disillusionment in the gay community with both Obama and his party is palpable. Obama, who received strong support from gays in his 2008 election, says he supports ending the ban on gays openly serving in the military. But his administration is now challenging attempts by a federal judge to impose an end to the ban, saying it is up to Congress, not the courts.

1. It's the choice between voting for someone who doesn't respect you or someone who wants you dead.
Some choice.

2. I'm sure we'll be blamed somehow
It happens with boring regularity. You can already see the ramping up for it.

But hey, reasonable people can disagree about whether or not the queers cost us.

It happened in 2004 and Im sure we will be blamed again, although this time it will be harder because its a little hard to blame losses on GLBT voters in districts were GLBT voters are few to begin with. But Im sure those speaking from heterosexual privilege will be along soon to straighten us out.

11. it just never occurs to some people
the problem with a weak Dem party is that it creates the space for other parties to develop. can no one remember that in most places, a strict duopoly is not really what is on the ballot? if dems want to retain their position as an automatically eminent party, always holding great power and with the ability to independently operate, they have to, well, succor the actual base. which is *not:* banksters, or warmongers, Big Pharma or Oil, or foreign rich people. thugs do that far better than any dems ever will, as is being proven right now. otoh, dems are supposed to represent: the poor, the minorities, women, gays, peace lovers and freethinkers. when they can't do that? historically, they lose. when they do, they win, b/c there are only about ~1M uber rich people who need to go, and the rest of us can then move on to getting along peacefully, fixing the environment, tolerance and justice, economic opportunity and fairness, etc. these are facts, and history, not opinion. i was fascinated by some german and brazilian news i read recently, where people were unabashedly unashamed to say, "well. we did what made sense. it worked and things are better now." here in america, we argue over which side of the stage in front of two powerless TV personalities advancing themselves in the Village at the expense of real social activism we wish to stand.

12. What I Love.....
Is the threat used that "Republicans Will Put You On The Gallows" argument to keep the Queers scared, and in line.....

I am reminded when "Gay Marriage" came into effect with no help from the Whitehouse... and that was 2004 in Massachusetts....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Same-sex_marriage_in_the_United_States

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Same-sex_marriage_in_Massachusetts

and who was in office?.... damn it, I hate it when I can't remember things........

Oh, that's right.... George W. Bush.......

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_W._Bush

Gay Rights moved faster under a Republican Whitehouse (with the courts of course).....

Facts tend to piss off the crowd that want to control the Queers :-)

very, very peculiar the way we are viewed.

The condescension and, dare I say it, outright hatred is sick. The fact that posts only get deleted and the vitriolic posters are allowed to remain makes it all the more disgusting.

31. The article's basic message is almost certainly correct.
However, better social science research has debunked the notion that gays are particularly more "affluent" than other groups--not that that stops the Religious Right from shouting it from the rooftops as a way to suggest, ludicrously, that gays are not actually discriminated against after all.
