http://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2010/10/31/18662783.phpU.S. soldiers serving in Iraq have complained that the Pentagon has blocked Internet access to the Courage Campaign website, which includes its Progressive Voter Guide for California. If you know soldiers from California currently stationed overseas, tell them that the Progressive Voter Guide is reposted here.
According to Rick Jacobs, Chair of the Courage Campaign, a progressive activist group in California, "U.S. military commanders in Iraq are censoring the Courage Campaign's web site -- and preventing soldiers from accessing our Progressive Voter Guide before Election Day."
By contrast, mainstream political party and right-wing Tea Party websites remain accessible to U.S. troops.
The Courage Campaign immediately filed a formal complaint with the Pentagon, President Obama and several members of Congress. But the Pentagon referred the issue to U.S. military commanders in Iraq, who are charged with determining which sites U.S. soldiers are allowed to visit.
The Courage Campaign has responded to the Pentagon's censorship by immediately putting its Progressive Voter Guide on Facebook.
In an urgent e-mail to supporters, Jacobs observed, "There is little as precious to our nation as the freedom of speech, and the freedom to contrast differing points of view about the issues facing our country. And yet, the rights of our servicemembers are being violated -- and progressive viewpoints are being censored."
If you know U.S. soldiers from California serving in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan or anywhere overseas, let them know that the censored Progressive Voter Guide can be accessed right here.
