" Republican House minority leader John Boehner has been using a dumb--trust me, really dumb--line involving Johnny Cash in some recent speeches. Cash's daughter Roseanne doesn't think much of that. And she let Boehner know, by calling him "asshat."

I bet Boehner's speechwriters all gave each other high fives when they thought of this line:

Remember when Ronald Reagan was president? We had Bob Hope. We had Johnny Cash. Think about where we are today. We have got President Obama. But we have no hope and we have no cash.

And, well, yes, it is a very stupid line, even by stump-speech standards, but it's pretty successful at ignoring any kind of socio-historico-cultural accuracy (I mean, Johnny Cash, a Reagan-era cultural touchstone?) in favor of connecting three vaguely iconic Americans in some kind of nostalgia wonderland as though they really had anything to do with each other, like the rhetorical equivalent of those airbrushed t-shirts where Kurt Cobain is jamming out with Jimi Hendrix and Miles Davis is there or something.

Anyway, instead of high-fiving each other, they might have wondered what Cash's outspoken daughter, singer and author Roseanne, would say. Turns out, she called him an "asshat":

1. Johnny, at the end of his life, was quite concerned about the
wars going on. He'd have plenty of reason to still be wearing black today, looking at our homelessnes, the way we treat (or at least some of the Republican stripe) treat anyone who needs a helping hand, anyone who is sick and needs medical care, anyone who can't work, is disabled, lives from paycheck to paycheck, depends on Social Security and Medicare. Lord help us if the republicans are successful today.

2. can't get this jam outta my head.....
Seven Year Ache.....

You act like you were just born tonight
Face down in a memory but feeling all right
So who does your past belong to today?
Baby, you don't say nothing when you're feeling this way

The girls in the bars thinking, "who is this guy?"
But they don't think nothing when they're telling you lies
You look so careless when they're shooting that bull
Don't you know heartaches are heroes when their pockets are full

Tell me you're trying to cure a seven-year ache
See what else your old heart can take
The boys say, "when is he gonna give us some room"
The girls say, "god I hope he comes back soon"

Everybody's talking but you don't hear a thing
You're still uptown on your downhill swing
Boulevard's empty, why don't you come around?
Baby, what is so great about sleeping downtown?

Splitting your dice to be someone you're not
You say you're looking for something you might've forgot
Don't bother calling to say you're leaving alone
'Cause there's a fool on every corner when you're trying to get home

Just tell 'em you're trying to cure a seven-year ache
See what else your old heart can take
The boys say, "when is he gonna give us some room"
The girls say, "god I hope he comes back soon"

Tell me you're trying to cure a seven-year ache
See what else your old heart can take
The boys say, "when is he gonna give us some room"
The girls say, "god I hope he comes back soon"

And he didn't leave much to my Ma and me
'cept this old guitar and an empty bottle of booze.

Now I don't blame him 'cause he went and hid
But the meanest thing that my Daddy ever did
Was before he left he went and named me Boner.

I'll tell ya, life aint easy for an orange asshat named Boner.

Edited on Tue Nov-02-10 02:09 PM by Jennicut
Bob Hope was already 70 in 1980. Boner doesn't even know what was popular in the 80's. What a...Boner! I am a child of the 80's. Could Boner have at least mentioned a popular figure from that time? Johnny Cash? How about Michael Jackson or Madonna? I guess they didn't fit in a right wing agenda.

Now, me and Deliah singing every Sunday
Watching the children and the garden grow
We listen to the radio to hear what's cookin?
But the music ain't got no soul

Now they sound tired but they don't sound Haggard
They've got money but they don't have Cash
They got Junior but they don't have Hank
I think, I think, I think

62. Now if stepdaughter Carlene Carter would weigh in...
In 1979, during a concert at New York's Bottom Line, she introduced a song about mate-swapping called Swap-Meat Rag, from her album "Two Sides to Every Woman," by stating:

"If this song don't put the cunt back in country, I don't know what will."

Johnny Cash and June Carter were in the audience, unknown to Carlene. The comment was quoted widely in the press, and Carter spent much of the next decade trying to live it down.

Remember when Ronald Reagan was president? We had Bob Hope. We had Johnny Cash. Think about where we are today. We have got President Obama. But we have no hope and we have no cash.

Turns out we lost Hope and Cash back during the Big Dubya's administration.

Back in 2003, in fact.

Just a few months after you guys lied us into Iraq,
first we lost Hope, and then we lost Cash.

Yeah, let's talk about that, why don't we?

History's a funny thing, sometimes, ain't it?
