One defense of the Senate...
The US Senate is designed to be resistant to change. That is often frustrating, but since not all change is good it does have its points sometimes.

Only 1/3 of the Senate is up for election. What if the entire body were up at this volatile moment?

We would be looking at going from 59 Senators to 35 and the hot topic would be whether the Republicans could get to a veto-proof 67 vote majority.
