I live in PA, are people allowed to be right outside the door
of polling places handing out propaganda? There was a woman at mine handing out pro-life materials with all of the PA republican candidates listed on the pamphlets... Are they allowed to do that in PA?

Dunno - In NJ there was a sign stating you must be 100 feet away from the door . . .

Good luck. :hi:

20. Right.
Get photographs. That makes it much easier for making a complaint.

My mistake. I found it: 10 feet from the polling "room"
Edited on Tue Nov-02-10 10:22 AM by kick-ass-bob
so they are most likely fine.

4. Last time I worked the polls in PA (about 5 years ago), the limit was 10 feet
from the door of the polling place.

6. Signs and political handouts have to be more than 100...
feet from the precinct door. So is my understanding. I would file an immediate complaint locally.

7. Yes.
I've seen them right outside the door, handing out pamphlets, nail files, and other little doodads with the candidates names on them.

10. Every time I voted in PA, they were right outside the door
I mean, three feet outside at times.

I don't think the posters above stating 100 or 40 feet are correct about PA election law.

13. It's not from the door, it's usually from the ballot box itself.
They measure with tape the morning they set up the room. So, depending on how far away the box is, they may be OK.

14. From the Pennsylvania election code
"The Pennsylvania Election Code says that no one may campaign, post campaign signs, or distribute campaign material within 10 feet of the entrance to a polling place on Election Day."

15. I just called the election board
it's 10 feet. She was probably closer than that, a foot or so. I thought it was further away.. oh well. It would have been fun to call the constable and sick him on her.. :)

18. Call the constable anyway
Just to be sure. I'm sure she would appreciate knowing that she's scrupulously obeying the law, with an able assist from the local constabulary.

16. Colorado polling places often have a sign prohibiting campaigning within 100 feet of the entrance
Here it is 100 feet or "shouting distance". Perhaps PA should consider both 100 feet and signs.

17. No they have to stay a certain distance away that is a federal
law. If someone reports them they will have to move. But it is the responsibility of the poll watchers to make sure. Do you have any.

19. Within ten feet of polling place in PA
In Pennsylvania the rule is within ten feet of the polling place--

The Pennsylvania election code prohibits "electioneering" within 10 feet of polling places, but does not define the term. As a result, county election boards and individual poll workers have interpreted the code in different ways. In its August 14 letter, the ACLU asked Secretary Pedro Cortés to provide clarification on this issue to county election boards.

23. It varies from state to state, which upset some primevial
teabaggers from Texas during our last election up here in New York. They'd never heard of our 100 foot rule.

24. First time I voted in PA.
I was shocked that they were right in my face as I was going in.
I told them that who I was voting for was none of their business.
(That was in Brookhaven, pretty red)
I said something about supposed to give us some space and they told me "not in PA."

Was this "pro-lifer" making any comments or just handling out material?

Did you take it? What did it say?

26. I've seen actual canidates near the doors, not handing
anything out - just greeting people as they come and go with their respective signs on display. I think the 10 foot law is probably pretty laxed as far as enforcement.

I find this stuff interesting though, I mean who waits until they get to the polling station before making up their mind??

28. NO-they must be at least 50' from the door - I have told the poll watchers on Pols and others
Edited on Tue Nov-02-10 02:45 PM by old mark
several times over the last elections, and was expecting to do so again today, but there was no one outside this morning.

I yell at them and insult them (Most of them are political candidates, and are hard to insult) and eventually they move - sometimes they leave.

Don't be bullied by these punks - tell the poll workers!
