Mass. State Senate candidate escorted from Lowell polling place
LOWELL - State Senate candidate James Buba was escorted by Lowell police and threatened with arrest for entering the Reilly School polling place in Lowell Tuesday morning. Buba, a
republican candidate running against democrat Eileen Donoghue and Independent candidate Patrick O'Connor for the first district Middlesex seat, told The Sun that the warden at precincts two and three at Ward 1 asked to police escort him from polling place.
"It is typical of a non-supporter in a position of authority,'' Buba told The Sun. "I got angry when I saw him (the officer) reach for his handcuffs and call another officer over to assist him.'' Buba, who had already voted in another precinct, told The Sun that he entered the polling station to ask the warden how many absentee ballots had been turned in.
He said he had visited other polling places and received the information without incident.Buba was not carrying any election placards or wearing campaign pins, which would have been a violation of election laws. Police Officer Michael Farnum told The Sun,
"Candidates can't go in there. One of the wardens complained about it.'' When questioned about the incident, Election Warden Beverly Anthes told The Sun, "I don't know what you are talking about.''
