"Citizens United" ruling. Grayson was massively outspent here by the GOP smear machine. My district is VERY liberal and there were Grayson signs all over my neighborhood (including my yard) but the corporate money machine brought out the big guns and essentially bought votes against him.

The House of Representatives is supposed to be the voice of the people. It is not supposed to be the voice of business interests, especially global interests, especially if it hurts those in this country. A representative represents the people from their state, they are the voice for those who have none-what do we have now? Those who strive to keep workers safe, like in mining; those who strive to aid the people by promoting decent jobs?

Has the people's house become the "corporate" house? The teabaggers funded by big money have worked against their own interest--with the help and access of corporate media, they've bought into the factless, illogical blatherings of people like Beck and O'Llielly--their hate spewing "idols" have told them that shite is cake and they eat it up, to their own detriment.

They've voted for the same people who created the problem-lying us into war, flooding private corporations (some war profiteers) with our money, while these same corporations have on many occasions given shoddy work and services, especially to our military. Over funded corporations, with little accountability, and now the people want to privatize even more, giving more corporations more power over them. The media has taken years to promote the idea (with the help of neocons) that the government is the enemy, that the government needs to be less--while their gods, like Reagan and Bush, expanded the government, Homeland Security anyone? What they really meant is that they wanted small government when it came to helping the "little people"--now if it is helping their corporate buddies, then that's okay.

Yeah, we are screwed--get ready for more of the same--more deregulation, more privatization, and less representation for the people. After all, the corporate personhood is way more valuable than the individual citizen.

Grayson is not a DUer, but I am. Grayson is a wealthy man, and I am not. Grayson ran for Congress and won, and then lost his re-election, but he is still a wealthy man. Grayson came to DU in order to get funds for his re-election. Which is fine. I like to see places like DU have more political muscle, perhaps someday enough to compete with the Kochs, although that is clearly wishful thinking especially now, after the Kochs just steam-rolled us.

But I also ran for Congress. I ran myself ragged going all over this district and spent something like $4,000 of my own money along with 200 hours of my time. The ignorant Democratic Primary voters rejected me. I hate to cast aspersions on the electorate, but that is what the results showed. Even the people who voted FOR me, seemed to be ignorant. They voted for me because I lived closer to them. My own county voted for me by 85%, not because they knew my positions on the issues and agreed with them, but mostly because they knew I lived in the same county as them. Some of them, perhaps 200 out of 1500, knew me, or knew of me, and I did do some leg work in Jefferson County, but most of them were just voting based on location.

My name is generally mud here, though, unlike Graysons. He's a fiery liberal and I am an annoying moderate, except on the economic issues that nobody cares about here. I might like to think that DU could learn the hard truth, that "being an outspoken progressive" is not a magic formula for winning an election. Not even in a leftist swing state like Wisconsin.

And Grayson is still a wealthy man, and I am not.

one, he asked DU for money, while I did not/could not. Second, as an incumbent with his own resources, he was less in need than other candidates, like myself, or even Cheryl.

I don't think I lacked a messaging strategy as much as I lacked the resources to do any messaging at all beyond a website and a few newspaper ads.

and instead stayed at home and worked on GOTV in my home county and in Topeka. Another 2,000 voters in those areas goto the polls and I woulda won it. That would require increasing turn out by 21% in those two counties, but in the 2004 primary 16,694 people voted in the two counties while in 2010 the turn out was only 9410, so theoretically I could have gotten another 7,000 people to the polls and I only needed 1/3 of that. Not to mention the 440 voters from Topeka who went to the primary, but did not vote in my race. At least they admitted they did not know, instead of picking one at random.

More and more of us are resorting to 'react' mode, letting our inchoate fears and frustrations manifest as road rage, name-calling, sarcasm, and myriad other forms of mental, emotional and physical violence.
