73-Year-Old Busts His Dog Out of Jail, Dog Gets Killed Anyway

Believing his dog was going to be euthanized, an elderly man in Hydro, OK took matters into his own hands and sprang his dog from the local kennel using bolt cutters and a lawn tractor as his getaway ride.

Edwin Fry’s efforts backfired. He was intercepted by the police on his way back home and was arrested for second-degree burglary, trespassing and destroying city property.

Unfortunately, while he was in jail, his worst fears were realized when his dog, Buddy Tough, was returned to the kennel and euthanized.

TAKE ACTION: Help protect dogs in Oklahoma!

Chris Chancellor, a Hydro police officer, told the Oklahoman there had been an increase in complaints about loose dogs after two other dogs killed a show calf a few weeks earlier.

Complaints had also previously been made about Buddy Tough running loose. He had been in the pound before, but Fry had paid the $50 fine to get him back. A second offense would mean a $100 fine, which Fry apparently had no intention of paying. He had also warned police to stay away from his dog, unless they wanted to “face his shotgun.”

While Fry was in jail waiting to make bail, Buddy Tough was euthanized.

"He's flying now with the angels, and I know I'll see him again," Fry said.

While Fry had responsibility here in that he did break the law and should have kept his dog leashed, in the house or fenced his yard to protect the dog as much as protect others, the compassion, the very reason animal shelters were established, seems to have been forgotten here.

2. I think Auntie Alf would have approved.
My heart goes out to Mr Fry, and especially Buddy Tough. RIP, pup.
