DU "Hell, Yeah!" Russ Feingold Appreciation Thread!
Edited on Tue Nov-02-10 10:44 PM by Hissyspit
Whether Sen. Feingold has to condede or not, we should let him know how much he has been appreciated by us over the years. A TRUE Senate Maverick. From Wikipedia:

Feingold's primary legislative focus has been on campaign finance reform, fair trade policies, health care reform, conservation and environmental protection, a multilateral foreign policy, Social Security, civil liberties, and the elimination of capital punishment and wasteful spending.

Feingold was the ONLY Democratic senator to vote against a motion to dismiss Congress's 1998–1999 impeachment case of President Bill Clinton.

Feingold was the ONLY senator to vote against the USA PATRIOT Act when first voted on in 2001.

Feingold was one of 28 US senators to vote against H.J. Resolution 114, which authorized President George W. Bush to use force against Iraq in 2002.

On March 14, 2006, Feingold introduced a resolution in the Senate to censure President Bush.

On August 17, 2005, he became the first senator to call for the withdrawal of troops from Iraq and urge that a timetable for that withdrawal be set. He called other Democrats "timid" for refusing to take action sooner

Senator Russ Feingold, one of the harshest critics of the Bush administration's national security policies, says he cannot bring himself to support President Obama's apparent decision not to investigate or prosecute illegalities from those years.

"If you want to see just how outrageous this is, I refer you to the remarks made by Peggy Noonan this Sunday," he said, referring to the longtime conservative columnist's appearance on ABC's This Week. "I frankly have never heard anything quite as disturbing as her remark that was something to the affect of: 'well sometimes you just have to move on."

"Gay and lesbian couples should be able to marry and have access to the same rights, privileges and benefits that straight couples currently enjoy."

"I also quickly realized that two cautions were necessary and I raised them on the Senate floor within one day of the attacks.

The first caution was that we must continue to respect our Constitution and protect our civil liberties in the wake of the attacks. As the chairman of the Constitution Subcommittee of the Judiciary Committee, I recognize this is a different world with different technologies, different issues, and different threats. Yet we must examine every item that is proposed in response to these events to be sure we are not rewarding these terrorists and weakening ourselves by giving up the cherished freedoms that they seek to destroy.

The second caution I issued was a warning against the mistreatment of Arab Americans, Muslim Americans, South Asians, or others in this country. Already, one day after the attacks, we were hearing news reports that misguided anger against people of these backgrounds had led to harassment, violence, and even death.

This was not, in my view, the finest hour for the United States Senate. The debate on a bill that may have the most far reaching consequences on the civil liberties of the American people in a generation was a non-debate. The merits took a back seat to the deal."

"I voted against these deficit policies. I voted against financial recklessness policies. And I voted against trade policies," Feingold said Tuesday to The Journal Times Editorial Board.

The deficit policies he is referring to are George W. Bush's policies, which Feingold said led to the deficit. When President Bill Clinton left office there was no deficit, now 75 percent of the "mess" we have now is from the Bush period's unfunded policies, Feingold said.

"Bush embarrassed the Republican Party," Feingold said.

September 25, 2002 – At a Senate Foreign Relations Committee Hearing on Iraq, Feingold questions the administration's shifting justifications for going to war in Iraq.

October 4, 2002 – Feingold indicates that the majority of Wisconsinites who have contacted him agree and oppose the war in Iraq.

January 30, 2003 – At a Foreign Relations Committee Hearing on Iraq, Feingold says that war with Iraq does not make sense and we must not take action - risking American lives - that will make us less secure in the end.

May 22, 2003 - At a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing, Feingold continues to inquire about the role of the United States in a post-conflict Iraq. Feingold questions Deputy Secretary of Defense Wolfowitz on the reconstruction and stabilization of Iraq.

September 29, 2005- From the floor of the U.S. Senate, Senator Feingold once again speaks out against the war in Iraq. Feingold highlights that the Bush Administration's policy to stay the course in Iraq is actually making America weaker. "I cannot support a war that makes our enemies stronger and our own country weaker and that is what I will not support the strategy that the President has set."

Hurting my mom too. Voted for him in the 90's when we lived in Wisconsin. Isn't there a line.. Nice Guys Finish Last. This sucks. And Alan Grayson too :(

Hopefully we'll come up with something better than Acorn and really get out the vote in 2012 and take nothing for granted

140. It doesn't seem like such a bad idea to me. He's still young enough to serve for a LONG time
on the bench. As such, he'd give the high court a much-needed STRONG LEFT voice. And he'd serve for a generation and have an impact for generations more. Far longer than he would have had as a Senator. And nobody could touch him. He'd be a thorn in the side of knuckledraggers FOR YEARS!!!!!

27. Sen. Feingold: FISA a mistake, Bush broke the law
Thanks for the thread Hissyspit

http://blog.buzzflash.com/alerts/384

"... In the op-ed, he wrote:

"The speech we hear in January, I hope, will be many things: honest, hopeful, inspirational. But above all, I hope it will be candid about the need to reverse the Bush administration's abuse of executive power and to uphold the presidential oath of office that our framers crafted so simply and so well."

In response to a question that addressed statements that claim this FISA deal is in fact a compromise and an improvement in many areas, Feingold responded: "Anybody who says this is an okay bill, I question if they've even read it."

Edited on Wed Nov-03-10 02:14 AM by Leopolds Ghost
Has the public become convinced that big-city corporate Dems represent liberalism, and therefore assume that true progressives like Feingold are even worse?

Why was Feingold even vulnerable?

Are people in WI racist enough to believe that Feingold is part of some secret pro-Obama conspiracy and that anything Obama does is socialist?

136. Sadly, this is why I opposed mandatory private health insurance.
Your friend unfortunately has a point. By making something into a mandatory -privately owned- utility without price controls, you raise premiums for everyone. (Imagine what college loans would look like if college enrollment was mandatory). But Feingold would have been crucified by the leadership if he had held out against Non-Public Insuricare.

We really need Feingold's leadership some place to help America out of this mess. Maybe now he'd consider presidential runs, etc. instead of "staying to fight in the Senate".

Sorry out there to many Wisconsin folk, but I'm really building up some multi-faceted resentment towards your state... Between you throwing out decent progressives like Feingold and other pols in your state this time around, beating Iowa a week ago in football in the first game I attended in many years since my earlier time at Iowa, and other elements of a company from Wisconsin being involved with my layoff a year ago, it's all hard to take. So take it with a grain of salt if I sound a little negative towards your state now at times that I'm guessing at times might not seem too rational...

115. Feingold for President 2012
Picked up the button of the same slogan a couple of years ago on a trip to Madison. I thought it more a compliment then and expressed my appreciation to a couple of Wisconsin folks for their having elected such an exemplary legislator.

Come to think of it Russ was out here at a Cantwell rally back in '06 and was appreciated then too. For some of us Russ has been a hero for quite some time and I'm sure his participation helped to explain the turnout that day.

We're going to have a hard time finding another Russ Feingold. They are a rare breed.

Thank you Senator Feingold.

Although I'm f--ng sick and tired of uncontested primaries in the machine -- er, party.

Losing progressive candidates are sacrificial lambs that the Conservadems trot out every four years to drum up votes among the "idiotic sheep" or whatever Rahm calls the liberal base.

He'd be better off running for Senator again. I hope he does.

You can BET that the DNC would oppose his candidacy...!

"That ship has sailed, time to retire the old horse, he's too old school, too liberal" etc!

133. Sen. Feingold was the greatest of the Progressives of our time,
I've lived in Wisconsin for over 20 years. There is a huge amount of hatred from the conservanazis that blast over the AM radio waves. I mean rabid, idiotic hate-filled conservanazis. Early on what amazed me was that lots of union people was believing that bu$hit. Obviously it has paid off. Ron Johnson is a champion conservanazi PIECE OF SHIT. Dick Morris said someone could buy the Senate office in Wisconsin and Johnson did it. Now, I hope the greedy, white conservanazis get a good dose of the conservanazi crap and it destroys their industrial base for good. Serves them right.
At first I was amazed when I moved to Milwaukee to find out the truth about the place. I believed the state was very progressive. It WAS. As the years went by, I noticed that the conservanazis message was primarily against minorities. My co-workers were becoming more and more prejudiced as time went on. I realize now that the conservanazis' message is the same as the the far right wing kkkluckers. One day, a few weeks back, I heard a true believer conservanazi mention to another co-worker that in November we would be rid of "the Jew". Feingold. I hope his gun-toting ass is happy now.
I still support Sen. Feingold. He's been a great asset to Wisconsin. Ron Johnson is a lying POS. He won't bring any jobs to Wisconsin. He will do his best to create jobs in Communist China. He and his Chamber of Commerce love the Communist Chinese for their cheap slave labor and lack of morals.
