The Greens needed 50K votes to gain permanent ballot access. Sometimes I think about the

a candidate can run on more than one line. They have to petition the party to be on their ballot in the primary. The dems have been going after the Independence line (a conservative party). If the Greens are going to be on the ballot they need to get a certain number of votes in the last election. This will help the Dems move left and not right to win a line on the general election ballot. Confusing but the minor parties have no chance of winning on their own here so this gives the minors a say in election too.

All some people can think of is Nader when you say Green party. He didn't lose the election then and it's just an excuse for a candidate who lost by moving right of center.

I don't remember any race in which the Green Party has cross-endorsed a candidate to take advantage of the fusion voting rule. Their basic M.O. is to ask whether the Democrat is perfect. If the answer is No -- and so far, it always has been -- then they run their own candidate. They thus siphon off progressive votes that might otherwise have helped a mediocre Democrat, or even a good-but-not-perfect Democrat, defeat a batshit-crazy Republican (like Paladino) or a corporate-lackey Republican (like Lazio, whom Paladino beat in the primary).

The way to pull the Democrats to the left is to win primaries. We have closed primaries, so if you're registered Green, you can't vote in the Democratic primary, which is often the key contest.

No one should cast a vote by deciding what vote would be appropriate in a different electoral system. Work for a different system if you want, but in the meantime, recognize that we have plurality elections.

Under the current system, mainstream Democratic politicians have absolutely no incentive to pay attention to the concerns of Green Party voters. The Greens simply don't support Dems, even when a good Dem is running against an abhorrent Republican. Given that, why should a politician try to appeal to them? Having them detest the Dem somewhat less,as they cast their ballot for the Green Party candidate, does the Dem no good at all under our current system.
