Has the general public ever liked the Speaker of the House?

It's a partisan position. Pelosi isn't popular, Newt wasn't, Boehner won't be. The speaker ends up being a liability of the majority party.

public' and I grew to love Pelosi. She was a firecracker who got things done, which is why she was hated by rethugs. Her term as Speaker has been historic and won't soon be beat.

found that a majority believed that whomever they voted into the seat would inherit the speakership.

I don't know if many know what the Speaker is anymore, let alone who it is.

But yeah, as others said, O'Neill and Rayburn were well regarded. O'Neill was an especially charming gladhander, he knew how to get good press.

disliked them or had no idea who they were (I'm thinking of Dennis Hastert regarding the latter category.)

Actually, it doesn't seem like Pelosi was so disliked when the Dems first took the House in '06; I think the Pelosi hatred is more of a product of the 'pugs spending the last couple of years catapulting the propaganda.
