Can we have a repeal of DADT now?
We were promised after the election.

It's after the election.

Are gay people going to get a bone before the two year hell of "We love you and support you and adore you . . . if only it weren't for the Republican House!"

I mean, I expect that excuse for the next two years. We all do. Here we are. But can Democrats dig in and do it before swearing in day in January?

Better yet, are you, who explained before the election wasn't the right time, going to support us now?

Can all our "allies" finally line up and make this happen now?

4. Do you think they can get some Republican votes during the lame duck session?
I sure hope so. Snowe? Collins? Call your Senators. My dem senator will vote to end. I don't think myrepub senator will but I will call anyway.

7. I'll settle for some Democratic votes at this point
Some hard-balled, filibuster shattering, no more bullshit Democratic spine.

Which, granted, hasn't been in evidence for 48 months now.

But, it could happen.

If they wanted it enough.

14. We had 57 Democratic votes last time, with the 2 remaining voting no only after they knew it would
fail. After taking into account that Kirk won, that gives us 56-58 Democrats, plus a possible Kirk/Snowe/Collins in the lame duck. It comes down to the Republicans, as usual, though the pressure to deny Obama a failure before the midterms might have abated now that the midterms are over.

25. He said he was against it till the review comes out
not that he would be against it regardless of the review.

While I think most Republicans who said they were against it until the review comes out are actually against it overall, I think Manchin's position remains to be seen.

28. I am incredulous that you feel that pressure to "deny Obama a failure"
might have abated? If nothing else the pressure to have things be all Rethug is even more intense now that the Tea Party has scored such major victories.

I have no idea why you think that somehow the Rethugs are going to be all "compromisey" now? This Rethug leadership is ready to make Obama suck their dick, and even then, afterwards, they will kick him to the curb.

22. The Democrats lost a vote last night.
When Mark Kirk of Illinois was elected.

No fucking way in hell is he going to go along with the Democrats.

8. Apparently, since you didn't cost Lexington, KY a Dem mayor, it's the
least we can do.

No more waiting for equality. I am and always will be an ally...without the quotes.

9. Are you kidding!? Now we've got to win 2012! Fuck the gays.
:sarcasm:

The reality is: this is what happens when progressives give up on you in disgust. You abandon your base, your base gives up. LGBT people and allies are a huge part of the base. And teachers' unions. And so on...

10. Maybe after the next election that installs a Dem House, Dem Senate, and a Dem Executive.
Your guess on when that may be is as good as mine.

12. I'm afraid I don't grok the point you're making.
You don't have to wait for me.

I'm feeling though like my pony was sacrificed at The Altar of Political Expediency.

We HAD the three things I mentioned my subject line, and HCR passed even though the argument can be made that it wasn't politically popular, but little effort was expended in the context of guaranteeing equal rights for all citizens. So little in fact, that my gay teenage Daughter will still be relegated to the back of the bus she keeps getting thrown under.

15. Sorry. Mistook you for another poster.
A new Dem victory will not give us a DADT repeal--not unless we get a new kind of Democrat.

13. I have no doubt it will be brought up, and we likely only lost one seat in the lame duck
Edited on Wed Nov-03-10 02:13 AM by BzaDem
Kirk won, but he is pretty moderate. So we will have 58 + Kirk. My guess is that if Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins decide to vote for the defense appropriations bill, Lincoln and Pryor will reverse their votes and it will pass. Even if one of them doesn't, Kirk might vote for it.

27. You honestly think Kirk will vote for it, a newbie Senator
bucking 98% of his party in what will most likely be one of his first votes??? :wow: :wow:

Let me tell you, there is NO WAY Kirk will vote for this. I'll also go further, Snowe and Collins won't vote for it either, no matter WHAT the study says. If even 10% of the military want to keep DADT, they will be the reason that the Rethugs NOW have to keep it in place - they gotta "protect" armed forces cohesion in "war time", fighting 2 wars!

The new meme is obstruct ANYTHING that may help Obama with the public (70% are for the repeal of DADT you know), with his party (even more of his want it repealed), and with his agenda (Obama has made a promise to get it repealed).

The Rethugs are going to absolutely stomp any attempts to bring it up for a vote, mark my words.

So why does President Obama say he would rather see the legislative branch solve DADT? It seems he's either walking a fine line that is invisible to us, or it's a cop-out.

Be quiet, or you will singlehandedly mess up Obama's chances for reelection. We can take care of repealing DADT and handling your other pet issues in his second term, I promise.

21. DADT repeal is dead.
Finshed. Over. Kaput. Deceased. Drive a nail in the coffin. Pound a stake in its heart.

There is NO way DADT repeal can win in a lame duck session of the Senate now. Our, Illinois', new United States Senator, Mark Kirk-R-Asshole, will take office immediately. He's said he's "waiting for the Pentagon study" before committing to a vote. And in the new exciting Teabag party of Senator Rand Paul and Senator Marco Rubio, that "waiting for the Pentgon study" translates into a big, fat fucking NO.

DADT repeal is dead. And we're not getting a goddamned thing in the next 2 years or maybe more. In spite of turning out to vote.

26. Sadly, I think you're probably right
At this point, I have my thin hopes resting on the President doing stop loss or an EO once repeal fails legislatively.

If that happens, I will probably stroke out from all the dissonance created in the aftermath by the people who suddenly find the President's "dictatorial" powers acceptable.

23. .
The death of repeal is bad enough, but the next few years of totally revisionist history about what went on all last year over DADT is going to be psychically migraine inducing.
