Hello to gridlock ... and goodbye to recovery?

WASHINGTON — Political gridlock is supposed to be good for business. If bickering lawmakers can't agree on anything, the thinking goes, they can't pass laws and regulations that make the economy worse.

So will the midterm elections, which are expected to leave Congress at least partially controlled by Republicans and squaring off against a Democratic White House, be a help to the economy?

Don't count on it.

A standoff between the Obama administration and emboldened Republicans will probably block any new help for an economy squeezed by slow growth and high unemployment. Congress might also create paralyzing uncertainty for investors and businesses by fighting over taxes, deficits, health care and financial regulation.

Ask any gloating Republican you run into what the Republicans are going to do to fix the economy.

Ask them what plans the Republicans have for improving job growth (cut taxes? :eyes: )

Ask them why things will be better with with a do-nothing Republican Congress.

Ask them which of the new HCR benefits they want to give up.

Ask them what the Republicans are doing to reduce healthcare costs.

Ask them to name just one thing the Republicans did to improve their life in the last 6 years.

With the "progressives" as a base, we don't have good support. The Republicans do have good support.

That's all we need to say. Where is the job you promised?

Nothing goes thru DC until I get my first paycheck.

Obama needs to veto everything until the republicans get me my job. Nothing else matters.

14. It's in Republicans best interest to tank the economy as much as they can.

Their whole strategy is to prevent Democrats from any successes so they will be thrown out in 2012.
They don't care at all if the whole economy collapses. They will even cheer (in private) if it does.

If the economy is still in a mess by 2012 there will be a huge embrace of Republicans because they will have shown what 'Democratic rule' is disastrous to the country. In a way they will be right because Democratic rule is what encourages Republicans to destroy the lives of the American people in order to gain power.

The way around this is to convince the public that the GOP is responsible for their ills but the Democrats have consistently failed to do this. They try to convince with logic while the GOP uses emotion. Logic is correct and emotion is incorrect but it doesn't matter. Perception is all that matters and the Republicans have that all wrapped up.

Obama has already conceded to more bipartisanship in the next two years which I'm convinced will mean death to the Democrats.

After 2012 the GOP will have to try a different tact but until then all their energies will go to damaging America as much as they can and all we can do is sit around and suffer unless the Democrats find it in their hearts to go fiercely on the offensive.
