6. I had a sign in the back of my car in 1984 - "Don't Vote - Don't Bitch"
It is that simple. We got a second term of Reaganomics and Grecian Formula 44 that year. Anytime someone started bitching about it, I asked, "did you vote?" If they answered in the negative, I told them to shut the fuck up because they didn't exercise the right to complain.

nothing has really changed all that is different is that we thought we had a chance at something better, we really never had a shot.

8. My guess is never. Dumb people don't do "Remorse" or "Change".
After all, Tricke-Down Gut-o-nomics was given a 30 year Titanic joyride no matter how many recessions or spectacular crashes resulted. What's another TWO?

"After all, Tricke-Down Gut-o-nomics was given a 30 year Titanic joyride no matter how many recessions or spectacular crashes resulted. What's another TWO?"

"trickle-down" economics is based on sound policy, but Reagan implemented it wrong. It's based on the idea that if a business owner has more money available to invest in their business, they will. However, it doesn't work well in a recession. Why? Because those individuals getting the tax breaks don't have the confidence in the market to invest in their business. Instead, they keep that money to ensure their future is sound. During economic growth, making more capital available to businesses is very effective. But during growth, many people don't like to see tax breaks, so it's unpopular at that time.

10. I don't think many voters can make the connection between politics and economics
They can't see how who they vote for affects their own bottom line. The whole system is much too complicated and arcane for the average American to understand. The only thing they can relate to is the endless "cut taxes" refrain from the right - they can make that connection but as far as everything else, they don't understand it. They only vote as they are told to.

Dead on begin_within,

this is a problem that the Democrats face right now. Few actually care about the economy improving as a whole, they just want a job for themselves, or to see their taxes go down, or receive something.

The GDP could double overnight, but if Jim the roofer doesn't find a job, he doesn't think the economy has improved. I think now is a good time to reform the tax code and make things a little more fair. Nearly half of our country does not pay income tax, thats a problem. I don't think those who are very poor should have to pay the same rates as the wealthy, but not paying any taxes causes disillusionment. Everyone needs to be able to feel the tax burden so they can feel the improvements. Without that, people will continue to vote for what helps them, and nobody else. Democrat, Republican, whatever...America has become very "me first", and thats a problem.
