It is one, because as human beings, we're all fallible from time to time and we need to take account of our own failures in order to correct them, in our endeavors to try, until we eventually succeed.
Last night was another such case... Pretty much a demonstration that none of us are perfect. Besides, we had a lot working against us; from all the big money that was thrown into all of the campaigns, the GOP's exploitation of this country's excessive amount of preexisting fear, trepidation, hatred and ignorance, all the way to all of the in-fighting that even manifests itself on DU.
So, we ask, "What's next?"
I'm sure that there are a lot of perfectly valid answers out there, but one thing that can't be said is that all is lost.
The setbacks require new thinking and new initiatives and a confirmation that we really require unity, if we are to move forward from here.
Now, as we all try to take into account each of our senses of purpose, I hope that we try to adjust our perpectives to also take into account the bigger picture.
- What value will any of our own narrowly focused aspirations, if we have any, affect the success and failure of our restructured attempts at success?
- When we take into account all of the punditry out there, who's voices actually unify our cause, instead of engendering a great amount of discord?
- Sure, it's easy to play the blame game right now. But let's face it, that kind of thing is going to cause more problems that it will solve, right? So, what's the point?
- Who were are really counts for a lot. But excessive fracturing in our own ranks only makes it easier for the other side to divide us and we end up with lots of egg on our faces, as we were last night.
- And lastly, I hope to impart that there always time for calm, reasoned assessments of our situation and respectful discourse because that's what grown ups do. We should leave the tantrums to small children and "adults" with small minds.
I'm sure that I left a few things out, of course. You should take that as an invitation to add your own perspectives.
I don't have all the answers myself. But I think that a strong strategy to succeed the next time requires showing good leadership and even better followership. We need to trust each other, as well exhibit the willingness to work to be trusted by each other. These are the things that create consensus... Which would take a ton of effort for such a gaggle of free thinking individuals like the ones that hang around these parts.
Is consensus even possible? I really don't know.
But, if we're going to win the next time and the time after that, we ought to give it a try.
You don't have to agree with me, if you don't want to. The choice is completely up to you.
